Wtf is up with churches in the US?

I'm no expert, but unless you're a Mormon then your branch of Christianity is derived from Anglican? (therefore catholicism) or no...

Being completely (and illegally, might I add) exempt from taxes on that income, really, really, really fucking helps, too.

It's a big tax haven, and there's (as you might have guessed) organized crime involved in a lot of it. Most of the Top 40 charts in the US are dominated by overtly Christian artists. It's been this way for a long time now.

For a couple of months I was jamming with a Christian rock band with a friend of mine at a small local church. Their practice room (an outbuilding on the church campus) had been set up with proper acoustic treatment and all of the instruments and mics were new and top notch. It was fun (and somewhat awkward for my friend and I, who are not religious whatsoever) but never materialized into a paying gig so we bailed eventually. I will say that everyone was nice and never tried to preach their beliefs at us, things ended amicably.

Ultimately I support people's freedom to pursue their beliefs, however I don't think that any church should be tax exempt - they need to pay their fair share like any other bottom line business (which is primarily what they are.)

Zack I am not try to hate on you man but the Roman Catholic Church, is the world's largest Christian church. Look it up in an encyclopedia.

If you think Catholics are not Christians you are either very uniformed or extremely biased toward your own denomination.

My mother used to preach the exact same stuff. Catholics aren't real Christians and neither are jehovah's witness or mormons etc etc.

Why do so many Christian sects accuse other Christian groups of not being real Christians? My very religious mother would explain away all negative behaviour of Christians by saying they were not "real" Christians. Which ironically included most every other denomination and especially the Catholics.

It all comes down to whether or not someone is selflessly seeking to understand and obey the texts of the Bible itself, and participating in an active relationship with God (prayer, meditation, repentance, etc). To be honest, someone who claims to be a Christian yet never admits sin is much more likely to be a fake Christian, or at the least just a very "baby" Christian who needs Biblical "milk" in order to grow spiritually.

I don't doubt that your mom meant well with what she said, but it would really take a case-by-case analysis to see if whether or not her particular assertions were correct. The information contained in the Bible itself is the metric by which the authenticity of Christians' faith should be judged- generally it is one who constantly repents to God (recognizes and admits their wrongs on a regular basis, and earnestly seeks to steer away from sin). If someone literally surrenders their will to God, seeks God's calling in their life above all other pursuits, gives their time and money generously, and constantly repents when they mess up, then it's just unfair and simply wrong for someone to immediately proclaim "THEY'RE NOT A 'REAL' CHRISTIAN!" if they commit a sin.

Someone like Joel Osteen, who preaches prosperity theology, is impossible to justify scripturally, and it is highly likely that he is not living the Christian life that the Bible teaches or is even a "real" Christian to begin with.

Again, it's all about the Bible, and coming to an accurate interpretation through an active relationship with Jesus- NOT an interpretation which in any way serves one's own selfish motivations.

As for Catholics, it's unfair to claim that all Catholics are unsaved, but there is a huge overabundance of doctrinal (and even political) "fat" that Catholicism has gained over the years, which is exactly what Martin Luther recognized when he began the Protestant Reformation. The whole papacy? Confessing to a parishioner as a mediator between you and God? Those are just two examples of the core Catholic establishment that simply has no scriptural basis whatsoever.

Y'all killed Jesus. 'nuff said.

I will say that the prejudice that Jews were subjected to throughout history wasn't always unfounded, and is often perfectly justifiable. (not talking about shit like the holocaust, that' just redonk)

I'm inclined to agree with Drew, though, and at risk of inciting Godwin's Law, leads to shit like WWII.

jesus killed himself, dude!

and... justifiable antisemitism? (please elaborate).

You're mixing up two issues.

Giving hiring preference to someone of the same race, or treating someone of the same race preferentially compared to others is racist.

Having pride in your heritage, especially enough to refer to a far-away land as your 'home,' is sociopathic.

so, you are saying affirmative action is racist?

a sociopath is a person who is not concerned about the adverse consequences for others.

+ a huge 1 to Aaron.

To Sir Midget Donkeys: I certainly do not think that all Catholics at unsaved or anything like that. I understand that Catholicism is a huge denomination, however, I do not believe that what Catholicism teaches what Christianity teaches (again, as the majority, not saying everyone or every Catholic church.) I do know Catholics that love Jesus and are in a personal, saving, and active relationship with Jesus. I just mentioned it because overall, the theology is very different.

Hey thats cool guys, your all entitled to your own opinions. I am not Christian in any form anyway.

I am actually thinking of starting a religion based on the gospel of Mel Gibson as revealed by his acting in Escape from Thunderdome.

Now there's something I can relate to and understand!

Bam I have my first follower already! Now remember to feel guilty at all times for the sacrifice Mel Gibson made for you when he fought Tina Turner with a mohawk.

Affirmative action is definitely racist - that doesn't make it wrong or unconstitutional, though.

A sociopath is a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience - this definitely covers the grounds of "unrightfully taking credit for other peoples achievements."

As far as justifiable anti-Semitism, as soon as you start telling everyone else that you're the 'chosen' people and that you're 'the one and only true god's disciples,' you're going to have some justifiable shit thrown at you.

Just a point of interest.

If the practical application and interpretation of the bible is the meter by which the 'trueness' of a person, or sub-sect's Christianity is, then how does that relate to the numerous revisions and interpretations of the bible throughout time? Can one only consider themselves a true believer if they adhere strictly to the Hebrew version of the Old Testament? Through extension is a person only a 'true' Christian if they openly request the death penalty for same-sex sexual encounters, believe in killing adulterers, those who aren't virgin on their wedding night, those who strike their parents etc.? I believe the application of the death penalty is quite liberal in a number of cases in the 'truest' of all bibles, and at the very least overlaps with a number of laws that would result in one being tried for murder in most western countries.

My biggest issue with the tax exemption for churches is that how it's applied today is illegal under the tax code. 501(c)(3) clearly states that a church with tax exempt status may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.

See: Mormons in the case of CA's Prop 8, Catholic's in the case of any Roe v. Wade-type legislation.

I had the choice, so do you. My father was a Jew and my mother was a Catholic. I am neither cause I CHOSE not to be either one.

EVERYONE has the choice. Whether you get your ass kicked for being different from the people around you is a separate issue.

You don't have to follow the Judaism aspect of being a Jew, but the Jewish people are also an ethnicity and nationality.
That, my friend, is an aspect you cannot ever run from and escape no matter how much you may want too.

I too have a Catholic mother who's half Spanish/half Filipino (although Anglo-Australian father)
I don't embrace the religion (always been an atheist) and like you seem to not embrace things to do with Jewish culture, I don't embrace anything to do with Spanish and Filipino culture.
I was born here, and as far as I'm concerned culturally speaking, I'm an Australian, but I do of course accept the Spanish/Filipino ancestry.

I could not agree more. I have a bible at my dinner table I read when I eat to remind me of why I am not a Christian. I am morally opposed to so much stuff in the old testament. Half the people at my wedding were gay, I am not down with all of them being put to death.

Or how about the rules for how to treat slaves? Why have rules on how to properly do something that is totally evil.

Or how about having a promised land that you walk to for forty years then get there and it is full of people, so you attack them because that is what god wants you to do.

My religion based on Mel Gibson is sounding more and more rational.

I cbf reading the entire thread that has clearly completely derailed, but two things..

Man, the Christian music and Country music avenues are the last one where people still buy your album instead of downloading it.

I think I may have stumbled upon a very lucrative idea... :heh:

I have no problem faking it for money.

This was Katy Perry's tactic (I think?), so it obviously works.. if you've got huge tits and go around spreading Christian messages like making out with girls.
I've also heard that they get these entire congregations to vote for Christian participants in American Idol, etc.

I tend to not place much value in Nationalism as I tend to agree with Doug Stanhope on the subject.
