yes "fragile"...

i didn't so much mean "deep" like bob dylan deep, more like "thorough". on top of the already quite well written melodies and chord changes, there's also a sense of meticulous construction to the songs, not just a "lets play this 4 times, then this part 2 times, then..." kind of structuring. especially considering how utterly non-wanky the music is (again, when compared to other similar bands).

well, I don't know. THey never seemed that innovative for a prog band to me. I guess they did fit everything well and actually did have songs that were more of a build up then ABACBA sort of songs, but they just miss something less tangible to me. Genesis had wonderful melodies and stuff. ELP took prog to all the excesses good and bad. King Crimson was incredibly innovative. Rush just plain rocked. But yes, they had the same problems as elp, but just weren't as extreme. They seem too clicheiish.

i guess you have to have a genuine love of melodic pop-oriented rock music to really get what yes was trying to do. there's no denying they were virtuosos, that's for sure. they just applied their talent for exact execution to something less "dense" than most prog acts.

Who would have thought that the ultimate metal forum wouldn't appreciate pop-orientated rock music? Maybe there will be someone who does in the NON-METAL FORUM THAT IS FOUR BOARDS DOWN.

Dude give it a rest, this board is a community and most of the people here don't post in the non-metal forum. So long as most of the GMD threads are about metal what is the problem if he (or anyone else) wants to discuss other music with the regulars here?

Fine. Let's have a chat about Erasure then.

If people can get themselves worked up over having a recommendations thread (including Grimarse), then it strikes me as odd that we can be discussing YES in its very own thread, not as a tangent to another.

Perhaps we should have a permament sticky discussing "non-metal" bands in the vein of the recommendations thread. Thatway my forum reading pleasure isn't polluted by threads about YES, Rilo Kiley or the fucking Beatles.

You don't have to discuss (or even read discussions) about anything that isn't metal if you don't want to, so I don't see why it makes a difference if the non-metal being talking about is grindcore or bluegrass.

I don't give a shit about the recommendation thread tbh.

Well if you like but all this bitching about which thread to put stuff in doesn't interest me, the more time we spend discussing what we're supposed to be discussing the more this forum is going to suck the fat one.

The more time we spend discusing Yes and Rilo Kiley, the more time we are going to appeal to people that suck the big chap.

Well, I do have a genuine love for the beatles :) I do agree that they were virtuosos though. I probably like yes 4/5 as much as other prog acts.

why do you have such an Erasure fetish? i can honestly claim to not be able to name a single song by them. yet you've mentioned them at least 15 times in the last 2 weeks.

that's really Dodens' thing. i just support whatever he feels like doing cause i hates teh n00bz anyway.
