YOLOCORE.

These kind of entertainment products (not going into the "is it art/music or not discussion now) need to be done.
Vast majority of people want that easy kind of stuff. Nothing wrong with that imo. Bluntly put I'd say something like "dumb music for dumb people", but I don't like the snobbish sound of that.

I agree with everything you say.

People also tend to forget that everyone of us was "dumb" at some point. You Only Live Once have an audience of 12-18yo kids. When we were 12-18 we were dumb too.

Hell, every year I think how dumb I was last year and that this year I figured something out. Only to remember that last year I thought I was dumb two years ago and next year I'll probably think I was dumb today! :D

I am reading Steve Jobs biography and smy1 reminds me of him. You see the commercial and marketing side of everything, it´s good to have some insight in these areas but you're over the top, it seems that in the end all what matters it´s the design/aesthetic of the product.

And yes the band sucks, they are doing something that´s been beaten to death. Nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing memorable.

Judging other people's form or expression of art just shows how much of an artist someone really is.

Hah! Thanks! Man, if I could have 1/100th of the success, world-defining influence and money of Steve Jobs, I'd be very happy. Is the biography worth picking up?

Please read my post above (http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/bar/874820-yolocore-2.html#post10611953) on what I actually think about "what matters".

Would I be happy if You Only Live Once had a fresh dimension to it? Sure. But a band that sounds fresh and original only comes along every 10-20 years. And I actually can't remember when I last heard one in metal. So for now I take a melody that I like from a band that seems to spend time and money on their whole production over "originality" that I don't like from a band that doesn't give a shit, cause "it's all about the music, fuck effort, it's art!" ...

haha yeah...when facebook switched to that timeline thingy I had a nice reminder of that too ;)

I'm not even meaning "dumb" to be insulting I think...like, music (movies too) doesn't always NEED to be thoughtfull and demanding. Sometimes you just want to shut off and have a some fun. I'm still having these "dumb" phases once in a while.

I only came to the realization where my "grudge" with that kind of "dumb" entertainment came from a year ago or so. I didn't like how I sounded "elitist" when talking to people about that subject (no real music, all shit yadayadayada), so I explored my thoughts on that a bit deeper.

I don't like it when I get the feeling, that something is produced JUST for the sake of making bucks with it. Shitting out a few chords you used a thousand times before, write some "lyrics" on top of that, get a fake as bitch to "sing" over it and get it on top of the charts.
How I judge what falls into that catagory and what not is of course completly subjective.
And what pisses me off even more, is that it works so god damn well, cause so many people buy that kind of shit

Of course the music industry is a business, you need to think about how to sell your stuff too, and it's hard to keep balance between selling and selling out.
I just think it doesn't need to be so god damn obviously pathetic in some cases.

I see why you expressed your thoughts on this topic and about this community, but that bashing was a bit unfair too, IMO btw.

I am not sure that that is even true. At what point does music become "simple"? Is G, D, Am too simple as a progression? For John Petrucci everything Tool play is probably supersimple. Is "Stinkfist" by Tool a better song than "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen? Who spent more time making their respective song? Tool? Or the team around CRJ? Does it matter who spent more time? Last weekend I made a dubstep-inspired album (!) of 8 (!!!) songs in 2 days. Just to piss off haters who bitch about everything. Is that album my favorite album? No. Is it the worst album ever made, cause it's made from scratch in 2 days? Definitely not.

I understand your general statement, but I never understood why music that is simple and possibly made only for commercial reasons is deemed "bad"? In the end it doesn't make a difference if some 15year-old girl dances to a pop-song in the bathroom while getting ready to go out on her first date or some 44year-old cries because he is listening to a complicated prog-metal song that gives him goosebumps. As long as someone is affected emotionally, then a song is good.

I didn't think I was bashing anyone. I was criticizing a general demeanor, just like people criticize that I think "too strategically". I might be wrong, they might be right. In those situations I usually say: "Don't get mad unless I'm talking about you!" :D

..and next year I'll probably think I was dumb today! :D

I think in two years you will think: "Why the hell did I spend so much time defending that crappy yolocore band!" :p

Although I enjoy reading your posts often, and think its good when somebody takes the oposite position, so a discussion can happen.

But I don't know. Music isn't just a product to a lot of us. To me music isn't about the number of likes or fans or sales.
It's not that only crap can be successful. Music should be more than just a fashion. There IS music out there that stands the test of time, and this one certainly will not.

The song is bad IMO. I don't care how many chords it has, copies it sells (or doesn't), or whether you guys want to bang members of the band. My gut reaction is "this is terrible." If I try to justify that opinion with production or music school reasons I'll likely show myself to be a hypocrite when I consider songs I love that share those "flaws." "Writing About Music is Like Dancing About Architecture" after all.

FWIW, Sammy has said he like to play the provocateur to keep himself at the top of peoples minds. That's part of his business strategy and probably why he slipped his own video into the discussion (and Drew's puckered butt hole). Consider that before you get too emotionally invested in an argument.

which makes him even creepier
