Not necessarily released this year, just the 5 albums you've enjoyed the most over the last 6 months or so.

Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Meshuggah - ObZen
Martriden - The Unsettling Dark
Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis (although I got it way before this year, it just doesn't get old... wow...)
Mercenary - Architect of Lies

But I just bought the new Opeth album today (hooray for small record stores selling CDs as soon as they get them), so I'm going to listen to that one today and see if they still got it. And I STILL haven't found the new Kalmah disc anywhere in Germany, release date keeps being pushed back.

So the list might change pretty soon... :)

Mercenary - Architect of Lies and The Hours that Remain
Meshuggah - ObZen
Zimmer Hole - While u were shouting..........
Opeth - Watershed
Within Temptaion - The Silent Force and Heart of Everything
Scar Symmetry - both albums
Amorphis - Eclipse and Silent Waters

these are ones that spring to mind.

This year has been extremely poor when compared to last year... but then again, last year was exceptionally awesome year for music.

Biomechanical - Cannibalised
Black Comedy - Instigator
Stam1na - Raja
Bloodbath - Unblessing the Purity
Qntal - Qntal VI: Translucida

Those are the only noteworthy albums so far. Meshuggah, Opeth, Testament, Scar Symmetry, Arcana, Textures and Rotten Sound all released embarrassingly poor albums this year. They all seem to have one thing in common: they all sound like the release was rushed, maybe by the record company?

But there is still hope for the second half of this year: Katatonia, The Amenta, Keep of Kalessin, Necrophagist, Evergrey and The Prodigy all should have an album out this year 8)

Keep of Kalessins new album is streaming on their myspace, not sure what to think of it yet, its very good but i prefer armada at the moment, sure it will grow on me though

Opeth- Watershed
Radiohead- Kid A
Scott Walker- The Drift
Nikita Koshkin- The Prince's Toys
Pink Floyd- Animals
Arsis- We Are The Nightmare

I've also been trying to get into Katatonia all year and it's not working  *frustrated*

Torniojaws: Too bad you don't like Watershed, it's my third favorite of theirs. However, I agree on the rest of your list :kickass:

How can you say that The Testament-Formation of Damnation is an embarrasing release? It is an excellent album and I havent removed it from my cd player since I bought it. It takes me back to around the Practice what you Preach and Demonic days. One of the best releases of 08.

Havent had a chance to listen to the entire Opeth album but is good so far and so is Obzen. I know its my personal preference but damn

Obzen was not rushed man. Thomas Haake said in an interview they took 6 months just recording the bastard.

In a recent interview, drummer Tomas Haake commented further on the length taken to record the album: "This time around we took almost six months to do all the recording and the sampling, we definitely took our time" . He elaborated on the concept of the album in another interview, saying: "If you haven't figured it out yet, obZen means that mankind has found its 'zen' in the obscure and obscene"

In my opinion Obzen is a great release. It's no "Catch 33" or "Nothing" but it's definitely not dissapointing.

I think Obzen was a return to form for Meshuggah... Easily the best thing they've done since Chaosphere.

Animosity - Animal
Ion Dissonance - Minus The Herd
Suicide Silence - The Cleansing
Born Of Osiris - The New Reign

These were my more favorite recent CDs.

How can you say that The Testament-Formation of Damnation is an embarrasing release?

I can't speak for any other people, so I must speak of how albums turn out for me :) Not everyone has the same tastes, after all. After the awesomeness of The Gathering, the new one doesn't really have any songs that stick in your mind long after hearing them, and even during the initial listen (DNR -> Down for Life is one of the best album opening duos I've ever heard). None of the material in Formation does much for me.

Havent had a chance to listen to the entire Opeth album but is good so far and so is Obzen. I know its my personal preference but damn

The problem for me with both of them is that there's a few very good songs, but all the other songs on the album sound like filler material. That is a direct Fail for an album to me, since I prefer albums that are a strong entirety, not just a couple of good songs.

If ObZen would have another three or so songs like Combustion, Bleed and obZen are, it would be a very good album. But the rest of the songs simply drag on and never do much. Kind of like the problem with Catch 33 was. Meshuggah doesn't really do their best in the slower material, it's always been the faster songs that I enjoy the most from them.

Opeth suffers much from the same fate: there's two extremely kickass songs, Heir Apparent and The Lotus Eater, while the rest of the songs only have some good bits here and there, but overall feel very disconnected as songs, and even within the song. Also known as rushed material.
