Opeth suffers much from the same fate: there's two extremely kickass songs, Heir Apparent and The Lotus Eater, while the rest of the songs only have some good bits here and there, but overall feel very disconnected as songs, and even within the song. Also known as rushed material.
I doubt it's related to "rushing" as it's the only album they've written where writing was completed before going into the studio. I know the disjointed feeling you're talking about, but I actually like it, it reminds me of the way the songs on Morningrise are structured. Although I would say Burden flows incredibly well...
