Your favourite albums of 2008...

Opeth suffers much from the same fate: there's two extremely kickass songs, Heir Apparent and The Lotus Eater, while the rest of the songs only have some good bits here and there, but overall feel very disconnected as songs, and even within the song. Also known as rushed material.

I doubt it's related to "rushing" as it's the only album they've written where writing was completed before going into the studio. I know the disjointed feeling you're talking about, but I actually like it, it reminds me of the way the songs on Morningrise are structured. Although I would say Burden flows incredibly well...

Portishead - 3

Dude, how bad is this album? It's so boring imo. No good melodys and just too much "experimentation".

Meshuggah - Obzen
Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapian
Origin - Antithesis
Brain Drill - Apocalyptic Feasting
Job for a Cowboy - Genesis
Martriden - The Unsettling Dark
Ion Dissonance - Minus The Herd
Suicide Silence - The Cleansing

The Haunted – Made Me Do It
36 Crazyfists – The Tide and It’s Takers
The Cavalera Conspiracy
Testament – Formation of Damnation
Possessed – 7 Churches (just cause that shit never gets old!)

Not that these are my top 5 favorites, just what's been in rotation the most!

Winds of Plague- Decimate the Weak
Children of Bodom- Bloodrunk
Arsis- We are the Nightmare
Firewind- The Premonition
Scar Symmetry- Holographic Universe (Leaked)

Favorites in terms of 2008 releases anyway. I just acquired Scar Symmetry's new album yesterday, and it is absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend it.

For me, I've been doing a lot of catching up recently:

Dimmu - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (really didn't like Death Cult, but LOVE LOVE LOVE In Sorte Diaboli, so I figured I'd check this out at long last, and it rules)

Nevermore - Dead Heart/This Godless Endeavor (I still hate Warrel Dane, but the music makes up for it so I tolerate him)

Devin Townsend - Synchestra (has finally grown on me), Ziltoid, Accelerated Evolution (I have Terria coming in the mail)

SYL - City (long overdue on this one)

Finntroll - Jaktens Tid (SO INFECTIOUS, it's the metalhead's "Dropkick Murphys" or any of those retarded but catchy Irish punk/folk bands)

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (funny thing about this, when listening to "Anesthetize," the solo came in and I was like "wow, this is horrible, sounds like Steve Wilson wants to be Alex Lifeson" - then I found out it was Alex Lifeson! Goddamn do I hate him as a soloist, but at least he's recognizable...)

Still need to get the new Opeth, I'm pretty slow when it comes to getting new music.

well, only two of these are circa 2008..

Star of Ash - The Thread
65 Days of Static - The Destruction of Small Ideas
Ulver - Shadows of the Sun
Townes Van Zandt - No Deeper Blue
Klimt 1918 - Just in Case We'll Never Meet Again

I've been listening to too much of...

Cry For Silence - The Glorious Dead
Architects - Ruin
Between The Buried and Me - Colours
August Burns Red - Messengers
Parkway Drive - Killing With a Smile

just downloaded holographic universe album on friday and it is pretty impressive. vocals have changed a bit, but i`d have to say this is an awesome album they have changed their formula just enough to stay refreshing, yet they maintain that scar symmetry vibe.
I WILL be purchasing this album fa sho!!!!!! come on release date!!

TESTAMENT - The Formation Of Damnation
OPETH - Watershed
CHILDREN OF BODOM - Blooddrunk
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY - Inflikted

Animosity - Animal

Love that one but it's 2007 if i remember right.

2007 was full of amazing right, and to date 2008 is just average for me...

I liked the Bloodbath e.p a lot but i don't think it's "awesome" neither.

I loved Eddie Vedder's "Into The Wild" motion picture soundtrack, which was awesome (but it may be end o 2007 though).

Latest CoB and In Flames album were quite ok i think.

Hardcore band's Down To Nothing last album is the shit also.

Kingdom of Sorrow album was very disappointing (i love Crowbar and i like Hatebreed from time to time), as well as latest 36 Crazyfists.

The year is not finished and i'm waiting for the new Merauder record, the new Aborted record and the new Slipknot record as well.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the next Misery Index album that i expect to be crushing !

I still think 2007 was the shit, especially with the following records :

Eyeless - the game of fear (check it out : www.myspace.com/eyeless)
Wisdom in chains - class war (awesome hardcore/metal/punk record)
Down - 3 : over the under
Alabama thunderpussy - open fire
Animosity - animal
The black dahlia murder - nocturnal
Bloodsimple - red harvest
Severe torture : sworn vengeance
A life once lost: iron gag

Black Cobra - Feather and Stone + Bestial (Aggressive sludge/doom that just blows my mind and lays everything else on the scene to waste)
Odious Mortem - Cryptic Implosion (Tech death stuff. Fucking sick and catchy at the same time. Wow!)
Boris - Amplifier Worship (Japanese doom)
Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning (Metallic SxE HC at it's best. Grooving and moshing like crazy)

Meshuggah - Obzen
Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Warrel Dane - Praise to the War Machine
Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
Disturbed - Indestructible
Coldplay - Viva la vida (i've heard 2 songs so far, and love them both!!)
Sarah Brightman - Symphony
Paul Gilbert - Silence Followed By a Deafening Roar!
Marty Friedman - Future Addict (it's about damn time I hear him playing Megadeth solos again!! :)
Opeth - Watershed
Mercenary - Architect of Lies
Ludo - You're Awful, I love you
In Flames - A Sense of Purpose
Children of Bodom - Blooddrunk
Ashes Divide - Keep telling myself...
Arsis - We are the nightmare

Long list... I know... :)
