Your views on Opeth

yup,i have a CDR recorded by a friend of mine..."plaintive scenes"...I like it quite much, but to be honest i don't listen to it often....

and indeed the Sham mirrors is sth between Aspera and La Masquerade..containing elements from both in a pefectly balanced way :)

~mel~(so annoyingly biased when it comes to some bands)

Yes, it's _really_ annoying about Rockwave. So I guess I will have to go to Wacken this year too :p Hmmm.. let's see...

As for the Yearning, there's also another CD from them, Fore Meadow or something like that. Well it's not Arcturus, but at least it has some elements. It's impossible to be as original as ARcturus anyway.

As for Sham again, I think that I liked it so much because I expected something totally different, in a negative way, especially after the release of Disguised Masters. Much like several great bands that turn too electro for my liking: Covenant (or the Kovenant now) who released Nexus Polaris, one of the best black metal CDs ever and then they turned to Marilyn Manson black metal, theatre of tragedy who are now to electro goth etc...

I love My Dying Bride who began the return to the roots movement that seems to be happening now as more and more bands turn heavier again (Paradise Lost, Moonspell , even Anathema for their next album)

@Narcoloth.... hrm.... i would have thought you'd say The Kovenant has become more electro goth rather than black,..... i mean..... they really sound nothing like manson....... not even close...... but i do agree that Nexus Polaris was a better album, tho The Kovenant is a better name :p

The Kovenant is indeed a better name. But that's what I said , that they have become more electro goth than their black background. I haven't listened to manson too much to be honest, but he sounds pretty electro goth rock to me. As for the Kovenant, maybe I am fooled by their looks also. But it's really frustrating to have hellhammer aboard playing at 5% of his abilities...

They're good but their later albums have begun to sound like riff collections instead of actual songs.

Their earlier albums I would say..

@Melancholia: np for the list.. I'll be in Greece next Sunday.. and sorry about the fest. I know how you feel, I'd be there just for Opeth and the whole thing sux.. I think they'll visit Greece soon though, don't know, just a feeling.. I'm waiting for you on the IRC server :) see you soon...

supposedly, they'll be touring america in novembre, to support the first disc of their double release. (scuttlebutt)

if they tour amerca, they'll tour greece, i'd think. every country is more metal than america.

Opeth is mediocre, gimmicky music, with no sense of style or melody for the most part. Then, they occasionally stumble into moments of brilliance, that they underuse for a minute or two, then go back to their pathetic attempts at sounding artistic. If they weren't so terrible at arranging songs, they would be brilliant, but I'm afraid Opeth in its current form elicits nothing but sighs of how good they could be if they learned to arrange. Another thing turning me away from the band are the fans, who on the Opeth board have proven for a large part to be idiotic monkeys devoid of intellectuality or any sense of irony.

@Narcoloth.... That, my friend, is the sole reason why I am losing respect for the band.... I liked them enought to pass over everything else, but when I heard Arcturus' Sham Mirrors I nearly pissed myself.... not only Hellhammer (which is a shame, truly), but also Sverd.... if they can both play that well, than why don't they?????......oh well..... i guess i can always listen to arcturus and all of the other 'You know, I'm tired of playing in Dimmu....want to form a band?' bands....

(surprisingly, they wind up being better than the original ;) )

I agree with a lot of this, the only album that doesnt completly falls into this category is MAYH to me, i can listen to it from start to finish and it manages to keep my interest. Blackwater park has some songs that are also good to me because they seem more short and to the point ( not ALL the songs but some )

Well their song structure is kinda "questionable" indeed. I agree with part of Misanthrope's and Ormir's opinions, but they've got better through the years... they've got some great and unique ideas though and they are really good players (each on his own instrument).. I'm looking forward to their next album(s)

opeth is such a great band just in the fact that they put so much emotion into there music . they deserve every bit of credit they get . their extremely talented musicians and i can only hope to become just as good of one in the future . not to mention they have amazing songwritting talent

I like them and I think I'll get some more of their albums someday.. nothing more to say :)

btw, I listened to Kovenants Animatronic few times and I thought about Marilyn Manson almost instantly. Still it's a good disc imo. Only heard few times though, I think I'll get it someday, the disc I listened to was my friend's.

i have never listened to opeth but i have prejudice against that type of band so i will simply never ever pick one of their records up. moreover, i've got a very short attention span when it comes to entertainment, therefore i cannot take long tunes.

hyena - BU PRIDE!

Hm, I agree that Blackwater Park seems more focused and to the point. Especially "the Drapery Falls" is just something brilliant.

I am pretty curious on their double release later on this year

Narcoloth (with a huge headache :loco: )

 i agree wholeheartedly with ormir. and, even before his brilliant words, with salamurhaaja. opeth are very mediocre and monotonous, with a few tunes here and there that would never make me feel like buying an album, let alone listening to one from start to end in one go. :ill:
