You're reminded you live in Australia when...

Also, I really appreciate you Swedish/Finnish guys giving us a dose of reality. I guess on some level I always thought of Scandinavia as the 'promised land', but it's interesting to see that more or less dispelled.

Essentially means that anyone who wants to give this profession a fair whack should be flying over LA-way, hmm?

If you can deal with the cunt attitude in LA, go for it. I couldn't get out of that city fast enough. No offense to anyone who may be from LA here ;)

Cause there's no ghettos and segregated minorities there. :heh: The competition will be stiffer there, than anywhere in the world. And in LA more than anywhere = it's not what you know, it's who you know.

Reading this thread, one band constantly pops up in my mind: Psycroptic. And the fact that they hail from friggin' Tasmania. I mean, ain't Tasmania like "Australia's Australia" so to speak? ;)

Yet they made it to one of the biggest labels you can reach with playing extreme metal. Sometimes, quality prevails.

Psycroptic give me epic hope!

...and Karnivool, although they're a different market really. They're still awesome though.

You know Karnivool came up in another forum when we were talking about relative popularity.

I managed to dismay myself by comparing their myspace plays to that of Miss May I and Attack Attack. Now consider that the two latter bands play a fairly marginalized style of music that the majority of the human race finds audibly offensive. Not only that, but they're kids to boot.

Karnivool were ~2 million plays.
Miss May I ~10 million.
Attack Attack ~33 million.

:(. No hope here.

Psycroptic are definitely a cool story, and some inspiration for bands down here, but they really are the exception. I'm not sure of anyone else who's managed to crack it that well in metal. And in the grand scope of things, how popular are Psycroptic, really?

They're on Nuclear Blast and have been on the Summer Slaughter tour in North America before. That is basically what I'd hope to achieve with my death metal band.

You are reminded when you are in Australia when;

1. You can choose which way you want to go in life.
2. When you can join almost any sporting club you want.
3. When you are able to place a bet on just about anything.
4. When you are hungry and can choose between thousands upon thousands of different products to eat.
5. You have a choice of over 1000 different mag choices for your car!
6. Your misses cant make up her mind on what colour carpet or wall tiles she likes!
7. When you can sleep at night under a doona.
8. When the weekend comes around, you can go and see your mates.
9. You can drink any of thousands of different varieties of beer!
10. Cant make up your mind at which restaurant you wish to dine in.
11. You can go about your daily business without fear of anything and anyone.
12. You can apply for 100s of different jobs.
13. When you can blow cash at a casino.
14. When a rod and reel can cost fuck all and you can catch your dinner with it.
15. WHEN WE ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY AT BIRTH TO BECOME ANYTHING WE WANT! ........................... and the list goes on and on and on ............

FUCK! This is the LUCKY country! Best goddamn piece of land on this earth. Glad to be a part of it.
Oh well, have to hop off the internet now so I can go record some tunes, for this weekends up and coming jam. Dunno what I'm gonna drink, maybe a nice cold stout, but either way, I'm gonna have to put fuel in my car to get there before I go, dont want to be having to walk 5 blocks, and maybe call through the drive-thru at McDonalds, because I cant be fucked cooking anything, FUCK I HATE AUSTRALIA!:loco:
Wish I lived somehere else like Zimbabwe!:Smug:

I think you're missing the point man.

I can only speak for myself though when I say, yes I find some things about this country annoying, but as I stated before, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I think this the purpose of this thread was mainly to have the aussies come in here and have a bit of a rant or something (at least that is how I saw it) and not to be a proper "lets complain because our country sucks" type of thread.

Haha, his post was amazingly entertaining I have to say, even though all those points apply to 100% of developed western countries. Well apart from some points like '11' which are just outright untrue everywhere.

I think it's cool you took the thread in that spirit, Dylan. It's a cool, healthy attitude to poke some fun and blow off some steam. Unfortunately I can't say I'm in the same boat. I've seen too much incredulous stuff over time here and have just learned to loathe the country and a majority of its inhabitants. I cling very dearly to the mates I've made who are reasoned, intelligent individuals. Unsurprisingly most of them also dislike this place as much as I do.

I'm quite envious of those of you who are happy with where you live and feel a deep seated sense of patriotism or national pride, whether here or abroad. I've never had anything like that - I only ever see the ugliest aspects of humanity. Might have to do with my home getting obliterated in my early childhood. It's hard to get past things like that.

Ooh I thought of a good one.

You're reminded you live in Australia when...

You have to point out to Americans how culturally inaccurate Outback Steakhouse is.

You know, I might even go so far as to wonder whether crime in urban areas (especially from ethnic minorities) is worse outside the US; I feel like it really hasn't been too much of an issue for awhile here in any of the major cities - maybe because there's such a defined "American" identity (even if our ancestors were all of course immigrants), so ethnic minorities don't feel they can "take over" in the same way as in urban areas in places like Australia, perhaps

Epic deja vu right now btw...damn (yes, when else could I possibly be talking about Australia being taken over...except some time on here long ago no doubt  )

But you don't have to point out how delicious the ribs are

I just want the bloomin' onion.

Honk my balls that looks tasty.

(Apparently) You're reminded you live in Australia when... you're surrounded by people whinging about problems they think are unique to them.

Geez guys, give me a bloody break. It's interesting to note that almost every negative post from an Aussie has been followed by one of the other guys from another country saying "yeah, we get that here too". Sure we may be deficient in some areas, but some of the things mentioned are just plain old dumb.

Negativity begets negativity.
