5 Albums that have changed your life.

1. Korn - Self Titled
This was the my first metal album and it's the album that released the metalhead in me.

2. Nevermore - All Albums
I own every single Nevermore album and I believe them to be responsible for my love of music.

3. Anathema - Judgement
My first melancholic album, which lead onto bands like Katatonia, My Dying Bride etc.

4. Death - The Sound Of Peseverance
Chuck Schuldiner is my god... he is my inspiration to learn the guitar.

5. Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down
I never ever thought music could have such an effect on my life...

Angel

There were a bunch of records that triggered my interest in metal - for example "Wildhoney", "Draconian Times" and "Angel And The Dark River". These albums set me up, in a way.

Two other important albums for me were "The Edges Of Twilight" by The Tea Party and "Broad View Gardens" by Amber Street. I mean, I was 15 or so and I didn't know much about music that wasn't commercially succesful. So with these two albums I started to get interested in music that was "different".

A very nice thread!

At first i have to say that music has always had kind of an effect on me but there are certain albums/songs that really move me and remind of something good/bad/sad and so on...

Katatonia-Discouraged ones (this album got me into this great band and also into more darker/depressive music [of all kinds] )

Abigor-Orkblut/the retaliation (that was my first black metal album and that one kind of brought me to black and death metal,i still love it today)

Neil Young-the song "my my, hey hey" which i saw live on a german tv program called"Rockpalast",so it bought the "live rust" album (that song and the album brought me to singer/songwriters of the 60s and 70s)

Embrace-The good will out (an album which moves me with every song,it reminds me of many(good and bad) times and when listening to it i have all kinds of feelings.)

If i stumble upon another album i'll list it:)

Amorphis-Elegy
Iced Earth-Alive in Athens
At the gates-Slaughter of the Soul
Death-Human
Immortal-Battles in the north

1. Europe - The final countdown
This was my first heavy rock album. I got it in 1986 and loved it to death.

2. Iron Maiden - Seventh son of a seventh son
The first metal album I bought all by myself. It lead me to buy 50 maiden vinyls during the next 2 years. I didn't buy anything from any other band during those two years.

3. In Flames - Whoracle
My first "gothenburg death metal" album. This lead me to discover At the gates, Dark Tranquillity and so on...

4. Metallica - Metallica
I can't get tired of it. I have probably heard it a few hundred times.

5. Entombed - Wolverine blues
The first death metal album I seriously loved. Death metal for life.

Alice Cooper - Trash (my first expearence with extreme sound)

Metallica - Master of puppets (my first metal album -on tape!-)

Necromantia - Ancient pride (this album got me into black metal)

Arcturus - Aspera heims symphonia (this got me into "avantgarde" B/M)

Devil Doll - The girl who was... death (*shock*)

Ahh, the memories........ ;)

1) My Dying Bride (you all knew this was coming, didn't you)- TA&TDR- my first doom album, and the one album that has actually impacted on my life in a meaningful way (I mean other than me just really really liking it ;)). I was in my 2nd year at university studying classical music, heard this and realised I was wasting my time. Eventually dropped out in my 3rd year (actually didn't want to go back for year 3, but that's another story...), and I think it was in no small part thanks to this. It's just so utterly amazing, the depth of emotion, the beautiful melodies, everything about it....... I really can't add any more than that.
2) Bolt Thrower- Realm of chaos- before this album, I could not handle blast beats. At all. I liked Emperor and suchlike, but they grated me a bit. This album made it all make sense, I wouldn't be into half the insane shit I am today if it wasn't for this. Awesome riffs, I think the big dose of groovy melodies that BT put in their songs really helped (I love this band :D )
3) Cradle of filth (stop laughing!)- the principal of evil made flesh- my first black metal album, and was really blown away by the awesome keyboard work (Ben Ryan rules) and the whole detailed nature of the album. It was a major influence on my song writing approach (not black metal, just the over-the-top classical thing) for quite a while, and while I have sonce moved on (this was pre-MDB discovery), it was still a significant album.
4) Sepultura- Chaos AD- my first album with non-conventional vocals/ a more 'underground' vibe, had been into metal for 10 years or so prior to this, but this was a landmark album. Very cool.
5) Hell, what can I put here, there are many albums. Def Leppard should get a mention for starting it all back in '87 with Hysteria, Dark Tranquility, for introducing me to the whole twin-independant-guitar thing with 'The mind's I', among other albums, but I give #5 to......
Death- Human. Not my first Death album, but the one that hit me the hardest, and really inspired me in my playing. I sucked at speed-picking until I got this album, every night I would play along with Suicide Machine and others, now I can speed pick (I still suck, but less so ;))

YDG, we had remarkably similar music upbringings, Bolt Thrower aside.

And Dionysos, I used to have 'Trash' by Alice Cooper as well. Even today when I hear the much commercialised song, 'Poison' I get chills down my spine.

"I wanna love you but I better not touch,
I wanna hold you but my senses tell me to stop!"

God, that's good stuff. I suppose the symphonic vocals in the background helped get me into mor symphonic stuff in general.

And THAT guitar solo.... :worship:

Uh....let me see

Smashing pumpkins (-siamese dream-) This album have throw me into depressive and sad music.

The Cure (-disintegration-) Well probabily the bast album in the world.Robert smith is god.

The Cure (-pornography-) I can't say what is better. the origins of dark lies here.

Katatonia (-tonight's decision-) exactly the kind of album that you can't forget and the words are my life written by renske...

NiN (-broken-) Because he's a genius.

I wish to write another thousands albums. but you asked only 5...so..

Three persons being introduced to extreme metal with "Wildhoney?" On the same thread? Whee.

'Wildhoney' was a fucking revolution!
I am always delighted when I find it affected someone else's soul.
(I thought I was the only1 at the time I discovered it...)

life of agony - soul searching sun (damn... this is depressing... i *like* it!)

Well if you like it I recommend you check out their first two albums ' River Runs Red' and 'Ugly', the most moving lyrics and vocals ,the most depressing band I've ever heard and my second favourite after Anathema.

The Cure - Disintegration (I listened to this album ALL of the time when I was depressed... started listening to Katatonia because I'd heard they sounded like The Cure kind of...)

Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond (Bought it because I liked "In The Forest" and came to love the other songs... first metal album...)

Opeth - Morningrise (Made me realize that long songs could be good songs... first "extreme metal" album... lyrics inspired me to write myself...)

Theatre of Tragedy - Aegis (Taught me to respect female vocals... Introduced to me by my "evil" ex-girlfriend...)

Therion - Vovin (A fusion of my 2 favorite genres of music, classical and metal... I bsolutely love it and I'd never heard anything like it before!)

First and foremost:
IRON MAIDEN - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, for it made me a metal head... I was a lended a tape with this album by a friend in January 1990 and it set the ball a' rollin'...

After that:
METALLICA - ...And Justice For All, heavier than Iron Maiden, introduced me to more "extreme" Metal.
SLAYER - Reign In Blood, heavier than Metallica, on first listen I thought "This is just senseless noise, that guy is just screaming!", oh ignorant me...
NAPALM DEATH - Harmony Corruption, introduced me to Death Metal, though it's never really been a favourite album, it was just the first Death Metal I heard... after that came Obituary, Death, Morbid Angel etc...
DISSECTION - The Somberlain, introduced me to melodic ("Gothenburg" if you will...) Death Metal and later on also Black Metal...

This all took place in the first half of the nineties...
