I heavily reccomend Astriaal to everyone here... they're aussie black metal with a slight melodic tendency... they've been described as 'the Opeth of black metal' which i think is... fairly close to the mark.
Renascent Misanthropy was one of the best albums of 2003, although I'd reckon they're not much like Opeth at all. I'd just say they're an utterly furious mix of Satyricon, Dissection and Dark Funeral with the occasional mellow moment. :) I'd say that Dornenreich is closer to being a black metal Opeth.

Ah well, my list:

Agalloch - The Mantle - In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion
Devin Townsend/ Ocean Machine - Biomech - Bastard
Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth - The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove
Ulver - Perdition City - The Future Sound Of Music (I think it is?)
Opeth - Blackwater Park - The Leper Affinity
or...
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors - Radical Cut

Opeth - Still Life - Godhead's Lament

Extol - Undecieved - Time Stands Still

Slayer - Reign in Blood - Raining Blood

Living Sacrifice - Reborn - Liar

Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction - Inner Logic

Opeth - Still Life - The Moor
My Dying Bride - Dreadful Hours - Dreadful Hours
Anathema - Judgement - Forgotten Hopes
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye - Marathon
Primordial - Storm before Calm - Heretic's Age

Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve - Destroy Erase Immprove

I'm sure everyone has a good collection of music, but since I'm probably older than 2/3 of you guys, my collection is over 1200. This is a good topic, though, but difficult. I'm going to list 2 top 5's, because at first, I only pretty much listened to prog/hard rock. But for the last 7-10 years, it's mostly metal.
Yes-Tales From Topographic Oceans-Revealing Science of God
Rush-Permanent Waves-Natural Science
Genesis-Wind and Wuthering-One For the Vine
King Crimson-Lark's Tongue in Aspic-pts.1-2
Fates Warning-Awaken the Gaurdian-Prelude to Ruin

Opeth-MAYH-The Amen Corner
Dream Theater-Awake-A Mind Beside Itself trilogy
Symphony X-Divine Wings of Tragedy-The Accolade
Arch Enemy-Wages of Sin-Enemy Within
Shadow Gallery-Carved in Stone-Cliffhanger

I'm glad that when I was younger, I started with 70's prog, because it definitly makes you apreciate the great bands that have been coming out in metal the last 10+ years!
