About Derelict Herds...

It sounds alot like Mikael has written some parts of it at least. around 4:20 into the song Ii'm lost though, Per must have written that part :P

I'm far more inclined to believe that Per's writing credit in the song is somewhat similar to Fred's in Porcelain Heart. In other words, my best guess would be that he contributed ideas regarding his own instrument and Mike wrote a song around it. Considering Fred got a writing credit for one riff, I don't think anyone should really take it too seriously.

A bit ill informed. The members alwats contribute ideas regarding their own instruments without getting _songwriting_ credit. Credit is for actually writing something crucial in the foundation of a song. And secondly, Per plays a lot of guitar and contributes riff-ideas to mike, dont pre-assume he writes keyboard-based.

I never said he didn't write something crucial to the song. But that doesn't mean he pulled a Mikael and went home and programmed a bunch of guitars and a drum machine either as the first of the OP's two solutions suggests.

I don't see why a guitarist couldn't write that line.

I'll ignore the troll and answer: it just doesn't sound like something a guitarist would write. Believe me, I have a knowledge about these things. I've listened to all kinds of music, well all GOOD music anyway and I have developed a good knowledge inside the field. Have you tried playing this on your guitar? Just doesn't work! You can play it but it sounds loco, doesn't it? On piano on the other hand, or synthesizer, it doesn't sound out of place. The structure of that opening is just so typical for a keyboard-based work.

^^white cluster and spd solos give that statement weight.

White Cluster is a good solo but is absolutely terrible in the context of the song. So it's SPD's one pretty good solo versus every solo on Deliverance, gl SPD lol.

And on topic, "I know these things" isn't a very convincing answer. Doesn't sound out of place if I play it on guitar at all.

I didn't mean the riffs, I meant that weird sounding melody that opens the song. What is that played on, must be a moog or mellotron or something...

Yea, I meant that too. I guess it's subjective since I play non-guitar parts on guitar for the hell of it all the time when I'm bored (i.e. transcribing vocals or something)

lol "context" isn't exactly a big part of Opeth's music. SPD solo isn't "pretty good," it's Mike's best solo period.

If context is so unimportant, then I suppose SPD's solo would be just as good if they tossed it in the middle of a Porcelain Heart verse or something instead right? Absurd statement is absurd.
