Agalloch-The Mantle

Yes, it is better than Pale Folklore, but both rule immensely.

Perfect Pale Folklore listening time: winter, but not frigid black & white forest black metal winter, nice sitting indoors curled up in a blankie (or six) watching the freezing outdoors. Hot cocoa optional.

Perfect Mantle listening time: Thanksgiving Day. It just works.

Yeah I discovered The Mantle via UM ramblings (before RC existed) and didn't like it for a long time. Now, we hold hands and discuss gay man sex in the evening.

:tickled: Interesting. I'm listening to Pale Folklore now, the "She Paints Fire Across the Skyline" series is in itself enough to make this album absoleutely incredible, even if the rest was shite. (which it fortunately isn't) It's snowing like crazy out here, this stuff is just perfect atmosphere for that.

I found Agalloch from SSMT's review of Pale Folklore right after Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor was released.

I rarely listen to them anymore. But Pale FOlklore easily eclipses The Mantle.

Still, when I want to listen to Agalloch, Of Stone, Wind and Pillor is the one I listen to.

That's too fucking funny.

Unfortunately, I've only listened to The Mantle 4 or 5 times. According to JK, it must be heard 50 times before it's greatness can be truly grasped. Apparently, I still have about 45 listens to go. So far, it does little for me.

For some reason, The Mantle is not as immediate as Pale Folklore, even though they're far from worlds apart. I think The Mantle is slightly more 'expansive' and so it takes a while to sink in.

I like them both equally now - they are siblings - and thrown together on an Agalloch tour is mindblowing.

I used to be in the same opinion of many on this board: in liking Pale Folklore and the ep much better than the Mantle. I thought The Mantle was long and boring in places, that it was way to expansive without having a point. And then like 5 months ago, upon hearing some of you guys mention it all the time, I put it back in a few times, and now I almost agree with Demonspell on it being the best album of the decade ( Isis -Oceanic is still no 1 with me).

Ahh.. Agalloch. my first encounter with them was when I saw "Of Stone, Wind and Pillor" in a record store and said "SHIT, NICE ART" and bought it immediately. It all kinda went from there, and now we hold hands and... well, you know the drill ;)

THis album does almost nothing for me now. Too many damn boring instrumentals, and.......I don't know.......it's just lacking something. It's far from horrible and it's above mediocre, but really couldn't give this album any more than 6/10. And that fucking Grey EP just plain sucks.

That being said, I also pulled out Pale Folklore, and that thing is soooooooo much better than I remember. Man, a great album that had written off because The Mantle bores me for the most part.

Still, Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor rules with no contest.

OSWAP>Pale Folklore>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The Mantle

I prefer The Mantle by far , perfect songwriting , the instrumental are the best tracks for me : Odal , The Hawthrone Passage , it's amazing.
The Mantle would get a 9.5 or a 10 while I'd give PF a good 9.
OSWAP is an EP , it dosen't match the albums for me but it is essential .
