ALBUM/BAND RECOMENDATIONS ATTN NINE FEET

Well I'll tell you a few of my current favourite bands & maybe that will give you an idea of what I like?? OK, Obviously Opeth, Symphony X, The Beatles, Tool, Dredg, Children of Bodom..

So I guess I mainly like progressive music that is done well.. Kinda broad I guess but I like a wide range of stuff....

Since everyone else probably wants to flame you for liking those bands, i'll instead reccomend you some similar bands which people will probably flame me for reccomending. Chances are you will like them though, so don't worry about it.

Andromeda
Kalmah
Gardenian
Ayreon
Devin Townsend
Porcupine Tree
Everon

I'm willing to bet you've heard all those, but you didn't mention them and they are bands i think someone who likes the bands you mentioned would like. Most of those bands are the "staples" of someone into those styles. And also ones prone to bashing.

in addition to what NFU said (he knocked out all the top choices)
(pre-emptive stfu to him because he'll inevitably say that he is solely responsible for anyone knowing about any of these bands)

also these are all metal

Summoning
Keep of Kalessin
Akercocke (newest album)
Dawn
Arcturus
Dodheimsgard
Quo Vadis
Psycroptic
Mekong Delta
Ved Buens Ende
Leviathan
Sacramentum
Samael (old)

Correct me if Im wrong but is their new album called words that go unspoken, deeds that go undone? What sort of metal are they? are they good songwriters/muscians? How do they compare to Opeth?

I really don't see why people would flame me for liking those bands, apart from maybe Children of Bodom..

indeed it is. they are a very forward thinking and interesting death/black/dark metal hybrid...very evil sounding stuff, but the way they do it is definitely against the grain of most bands in those genres. i give them an A+ i gave them album dozens of spins the last few months. they dont really compare to opeth, theyre both heavy and melodic, and both push the envelope of creativity in their own right...akercocke being much more sinister of a band though.

i can give a thumbs up on the first andromeda album to a point, it actually has some decent qualities to it...so i second that motion. everything else theyve done is awful imo though.

umm, i heard gentle giant for the first time today. holly shit...they have now become a need. the guy has a beautiful voice...they venture off into some need key/time sigs...very complex melodies...there is always something going on in their music.

+1

gentle giant owns. i have octopus, three friends, the one with the renaissance looking guy on the front(name is escaping me).

the piano shit they do along with the vocal harmonies are pretty bad ass. the song free hand and so sincere are pretty extreme examples of their style, but those two songs come to mind when i think of gentle giant. \m/

oh btw nfu, i love remember the future by nektar thanks to your recommendation, and i just received a tab in the ocean, and recycled in the mail TODAY! havent listened to either yet, i cant wait to be devirginized, ive listened to RTF a million times, roye albrighton is a god.

i used to love children of bodom, they were like my favorite band, looking back on that time period in my life (teenagerdom) it reminds me of a certain bible verse, and gives me hope that my manhood will reveal all sorts of deep musical possibilities that will progress in a mature fashion!

"For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways(bodom). For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood." (1 Corinthians 13:9-12 RSV) :headbang:

i have just gotten into jazz/fusion.

i have JUST gotten

john coltrane - a love supreme
miles davis - esp, kind of blue
gato barbieri - caliente
mahavishnu orchestra - inner mounting flame, birds of fire
weather report - black market, heavy weather
return to forever - romantic warrior
mclaughlin, de lucia, di meola - passion, grace and fire
mclaughlin, santana - love, devotion, surrender

i want to get more classics like coltrane and davis...ive heard mingus is good..but i dont know exactly what else to get.

i love the fusion style of weather report, anything like that would be awesome. mahavishnu orchestra is cool, but my mood prefers a smoother sound usually.

i like van der graaf generator type stuff and magma, and henry cow also...random free form jazz type stuff with jazz instruments like the sax and others thrown in. any recommendations would be AWESOME :worship:

as far as jazzy prog rock/krautrock try

Embryo
Hannibal
Aera
Thirsty Moon
Kraan
Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity
Tortilla Flat
Dzyan
Mogul Thrash

good luck finding any of them though

Children of Bodom

On some DVD I have there is a band called Imperanon, they sound a lot like CoB from the song I heard, so you may like them if they are always like that. I've never heard of them before, but they are probably like the big thing of the moment or something and I am just out of touch, but yeah, they are as Bodomesque as you're going to get without lawsuits.

i strongly recommend Madder Mortem and especially their latest release 'Desiderata' which is nithing less than brilliant

other amazing bands, besides those mentioned above:

Primordial
In The Woods...
Ved Buens Ende
Solefald
Agressor
Alchemist
Morgion
Ancient Rites

Hey Josey, not a huge jazz cat, but I have some shit I really like that you ought to check out:

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (you didn't list it, but listed Miles... forgive me if you already know about it)

Roland Kirk - Verve Jazz Masters (it will give you a good sampling of his stuff)

John Coltrane - Big Steps

Chick Corea - Verve Jazz Masters (same reasoning as above...)

Sun Ra - virtually anything

Surrender to the Air - (self-titled)

Either/Orchestra - Across the Omniverse

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters

Ella Fitzgerald - anything. She has a seriously killer voice that lives up to the hype

For free jazz stuff, check out Ornette Coleman.

Hope that helps!
