ALBUM/BAND RECOMENDATIONS ATTN NINE FEET

no i dont have bitches brew, i have just started to listen to his masterpieces....so much pleasure to be had! thanks for the recommendations!

i definitely need to pick up some ella fitzgerald. definitely want some more coltrane, i will get giant steps next whenever i see it. i will have to check out all the stuff you mentioned, thanks

If you're into fusion at all, you have to listen to Bitches Brew. Arguably the first fusion album. A great journey. I think Opeth fans would probably enjoy it. Long, meandering, moody pieces. Good stuff.

yeah i HAVE to get bitches brew,

i have been listening to Kind of Blue in the car lately....wow.

freddie freeloader is AMAZING....loooove that song. coltrane brings a nice sax touch to the album to complement mile's smooth trumpet playing

Hey NFU (or anyone for that matter)... how is the band "Leviathan"... I see their CD's at the store all the time. Whats it like? Any Good?

the win first place for ultimate band name tho... i thought I was a genious when i thought of that name and theni found out there are already at least 3 bands going by that name =)

leviathan is actually quite good. and even moreso is the band xasthur which is of very similar style that i already recommended. both are one man bm projects which create extremely dark atmosphere, while paying close attention to melody and large textures, while maintaining old school black metal ideals. think of burzum if he had the experience and the means back then. maybe a good starting place would be to check out the Xasthur/Leviathan split CD...very good stuff.

i agree that the xasthur/leviathan split is good as an introduction to both bands at once. but from leviathan you should really hear 'tentacles of whorror'. it is a really impressive work of art. not many bands can create such a dark atmosphere. xasthur also attempts to conjure a similar sort of atmosphere but the results are not all that consistent. wrest from leviathan plays better drums than malefic from xasthur and it shows. along with the split, i would recommend from xasthur the full length album 'a gate through bloodstained mirrors'.

Just a word of warning: Bitches Brew is like the antithesis of Kind of Blue, imo. Hard to believe that Miles was involved in both.

I could use some recomendations myself (NFU!)... I've been listening to the same stuff over and over again. Bands I like:

Opeth, Edge of Sanity, Katatonia, Tool, A Perfect Circle (first 2 albums), Deftones (I know), Bloodbath, Nightingale, Agalloch, Vintersorg, Sepultura (early stuff), Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Hypocrisy, Meshuggah, Riverside, Mars Volta.

So I guess I just like stuff with a heavy twist that is unique :erk:?

Im not if you read ALL my posts in this thread. Im saying I like them but I can see why others don't. For example the direction they have taken with their last 2 albums... :p

i did and u pussied out and turned around and decided to back track on addmitting that they're one of you're fave bands...i do agree with you however on the deteriation of their albums, but still, u listen to the newest one enough so u can't dislike it too much...

Thumbs up to whoever recommended Evoken. i've been listening to them a lot in the past month.

Good to hear it, Nick is a good friend of mine, most humble songwriter ive ever met, he takes every compliment he gets to heart, ill let him know how far their music stretches. I also want to recommend their newest album especially to anyone remotely interested in doom metal...

i love Evoken since their first album and i never thought they could surpass 'Quietus', yet i must say 'Anithesis Of Light' is even better. surely one of the best releases in 2005. you can't get your death-doom more darker and monumental. highly recommended

Cool thanks very much, How easy is it to get CDs by these bands? I live in New Zealand and our record stores are pretty shitty when it comes to having more underground type stuff...

Most of those you won't find in NZ record stores - im down in chch, and check regularly for good music. Your best bet is to order online (www.fishpond.co.nz is a great site, though doesn't have everything), or keep an eye open on trademe.

Of course almost any music store will order them in for you if you ask.

esoteric. or my band which comes very close. but evoken are indeed the kings.

Esoteric, huh? Can you tell me a bit about them? I've been on the fence about getting their stuff.

one word: "Metamorphogenesis". its in my top 5 doom records of all time, alongside candlemass, evoken and disembowelment, etc. Definitely a prime Esoteric album to check out. THey create layers upon layers of thick doomy atmosphere with such a forward thinking and at times almost evil psycadelic type vibe. I couldnt do it justice to describe them, i really think you just need to hear that album. Be in the right mindset too...make sure you have the time and gumption to listen.

Sounds compelling. How's "Subconsious Dissolution Into The Continuum"?

all their stuff is good, i just think metamorphogenesis is the best album for new fans to start with. the others can get a bit self indulgent and have a bit of a required taste and need for repeated listens. but i strongly back any installment into their catalog, but i urge you to take my advice on this one.
