Of course he knew. And if my theory is correct, so did the COB guys. To what extent he was in denial and for how long who knows. The lyrics of course show his acknowledgment but it could still have competed with his tough guy/ rock 'n roll persona.

Anyways, glad they are sharing this with the world. Hopefully someone will translate that text from the Finnish.

I think Alexi possibly knew his days being numbered. I mean, he was in very bad shape between 2018-2019 and in 2019 happened a lot. CoB quitting, Alexi selling his rights to CoB name and a release of a book which told his story, not to mention lyrics on Hexed album. This is just my thought.

Seeing official obituary hit me hard and today was very sad day. I still think of him and CoB every day, but listening to their music is just too painful yet.

It may be possible, because selling his part of CoB might be about securing his lifework behind Jaska, Janne and Henkka. I believe he trusted his mates most what comes to CoB. I think he wouldn't have wanted anyone else getting their hands on his lifework, royalties and stuff. When news came out about CoB quitting, I was very confused because they had just released an album and bit later it was informed Alexi sold his part to Janne, Jaska and Henkka so it got bells ringing in my head this is not a result of guys arguing on tour or about band members having children. Now it seems clear why they did all that and I think Alexi made right thing. I believe CoB quitting was extreme wake up call for Alexi to take care of himself and it all was about love and worry for their friend and brother.

It depends on the contract but they do own the name Children of Bodom which is why Alexi had to continue COB under the new name Bodom after Midnight. He sold his share of the brand so that could just be merchandise and the name. BAM would have been able to play COB songs as long as the venue had a cover licence. It's not uncommon for past members to sign over the rights and future royalties once they leave a band but this was an opposite situation where they got the rights and then called quits.

But it would make sense...in retrospect, the whole end of COB looks way different than until recently. I remember wondering already in 2017 or 2018 why the album takes so long to get released. They had it already done for quite some time, but it got pushed back a lot. Back then they said it has something to do with the label and they don't understand it themselves. But now, who knows...it probably was all a part of knowing the end isn't far away.

Everyhing looks different now in retrospect...I remember being shocked in 2019 about how thin Alexi has become and I didn't get why they still play all those concerts...the footage on Youtube really frightened me and I just wished he would stop the concerts and get some help. Now I can imagine that maybe the touring didn't make any difference for his illness and as much as he loved playing live, he convinced the others to continue for a bit longer.

Everyone of them MUST have known how serious it was...damn, this suddenly reminds me to the final years of Queen...they didn't tour anymore, but they did continue recording and there were already rumors for years about Freddie's health and illness, but the other three band members never said a word about it and denied all the rumors until the very end. This here seems quite similar now...they kept on going with him as long as they thought it was possible, they had those final shows and he made sure that they decide everything COB-related in the future by selling his rights. The autobiography is another thing that "surprisingly" was finished just in time.

I always thought something didn't feel right about them getting so far apart over the years...I always thought back to the documentary on the live DVD where they talked about being brothers etc. and how close they were since early years. Of course people change over time and it can happen, but I think now it's pretty clear in this case it was an ongoing process knowing the end is near for 2-3 years at least probably. The others knew and had to handle that situation as well, while also respecting Alexi's wish for it to remain private and not telling anyone. Damn, no surprise most of them disappeared from the stage almost immediately after the final concert...it must have hit all of them really hard, especially in 2019. Fuck, this is all just so sad.

Ah, I believe you are right and I got mistaken! I was thinking about BAM and how come they can still play CoB songs if Alexi sold everything to CoB mates.

I was very worried too when I saw how Alexi had lost weight, knowing he always was very thin but that point he really looked ill. I remember Alexi and Jaska FB live on Alexi's birthday, they were atm touring in US (I think?) and Alexi looked very tired and sad. People were asking about Alexi of he was okay, give him a sandwich, is he sick and stuff and they tried dodging those questions. I felt so damn sad, because Alexi seemed very serious, tired, sad and unwell. I was wondering how he had energy touring at that state, even it was something he loved but tour life is rough even for healthy person.

Then he started look better and I was hopeful he was getting better so perhaps it isn't something that serious. This is the reason I was so shocked when I heard about his passing. I honestly thought he would continue with BAM, make some new music and stuff and I thought how he would be in his 50's and 60's, is he still on the road? But no. I believed he would be similar god-like-creature like Lemmy. Well, I think he has earned legend status when he was still with us.

I guess playing live was probably what gave him the most still in that state. He wanted to do what he loves as long as he could. Must have been very strong willpower to play while being that weak and sick.

This is something I admire in Alexi, because he was so dedicated to music, touring and he was always so humble and kind to fans so I salute him for that. I always thought Alexi would do music and shows until the end and he actually did. He was very special person who didn't fall for gold and glory, but always remained genuine and humble.

And yes, Ozzy was the one I was about to mention too and it is unbelievable he is still alive after doing lots of kind of shit during his career! It is almost supernatural!

My friends neither understand how big deal Alexi's passing is for me. I heard the news right after waking up from a nap and I saw shitloads of messages on my phone from my friends and I honestly thought my mind is playing tricks on me or I'm having a nightmare. Nightmare indeed it was, but sadly I was awake.

It was indeed vey saddening to watch him receive these comments and questions. People in general and sadly also alot of CoB fans can be so toxic and entitled.

I received the German Metal Hammer today. Not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed by the text that describes Alexis life.

The author clearly wanted to draw the picture of an alcohol addict. He even claims that Blooddrunk and RRF were bad albums because Alexi was too much into alcohol and Halo of Blood was very good because he stopped drinking (Personally I think both are better than Halo).

It's also funny how he quotes Alexi from that Album ranking interview as a proof that even Alexi thought RRF was bad but completely ignored the fact that Alexi also said in the same interview that Halo was bad when he praises it as the late career Masterwork.

And some more stuff is written that I don't really like. For example the article claims that the reason for CoB breakup was that the other guys got tired of Alexis ego. Nobody knows that for sure. It's only a speculation, yet it's written like a fact.

And of course I completely disagree with that album ranking they did after the article in which they also wrote Bloodbound instead of Blooddrunk at some point lol

Well, it must have been in very bad shape at the time of Bloddrunk - as far as alcohol is concerned. It's true.
AYDY? and Bloddrunk were divisive. I think Bloddrunk got worse than AYDY, but I like it. Many people, on the other hand, did not like it.
RRF... most people didn’t like it I think. So yeah, it wasn't too good and HoB was better for me, but... I don't know, I don't think it was because of alcohol. IWC was not too good like RRF (I don't like these two albums, but I don't think I'm alone with it) and Alexi drank less in 2015 so...
