All time classic alums that you feel are somewhat overlooked

Another_Perfect_Day.jpg

moonblood - BLUT UND KRIEG (not so much underheard as underrated)
wolfnacht - HEIDENTUM
the shadow order - RAISE THE BANNERS
necromass - MYSTERIA MYSTICA ZOFIRIANA
helheim - NIDR OK NORDR...
sacrilegium - WICHER
sorhin - I DET GLIMRANDE...
infernum - FAREWELL
order of the ebon hand - THE MYSTIC PATH TO THE NETHERWORLD

Other than The Shadow Order which I still haven't heard I second all of the above. Lots of underrated stuff when it comes to 90s black metal. I'll add these:

Root - The Temple in the Underworld (I feel like this, in particular, should be far more recognized than it is. Shamefully underrated)
Nåstrond - Toteslaut
Nox Intempesta - Damnanus Dominum
Niden Div. 187 - Impergium
Nifelheim - Devil's Force
Setherial - Nord
Thy Serpent - Forests of Witchery

i adore WELOWIE. velvet cacoon burned bridges with the BM community so if they've fallen out of favour it's their fault - i found them a bit flavour-of-the-monthy anyway at the time but not as shit as some would have it. SRONTGORRTH is pretty good but i recall preferring the debut, i liked ohtar about 10 years ago, don't think i ever bothered with that nargaroth - only BMIK.

Man, you need to check out Herbstleyd. It's a very distinct record.

a few not so appreciated BM favourites of mine that i've heard recently enough to verify their quality:
moonblood - BLUT UND KRIEG (not so much underheard as underrated)
wolfnacht - HEIDENTUM
the shadow order - RAISE THE BANNERS
necromass - MYSTERIA MYSTICA ZOFIRIANA

If anything, that Moonblood record is overrated. A 8/10 record that's treated like a 10/10 because of the small print quantity. Don't get me wrong, it's a good, but it's nothing special.

I'll need to check some of these others ones out. I've been meaning to load up on some new (for me) black metal lately.

I'm checking all these dudes out via the YouTube. You got me into Greek Black Metal so <3 foreva

Forgotten Woods. Maybe it's because the name is generic in the sense there are many other "Woods" bands and it gets lost in the shuffle. But The Curse of Mankind is amazing.

Arcane Sun is generally highly rated, but not as well known as it should be.

Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice of Steel is a modern classic, but people seem to be less aware of it than their earlier albums.

Broken Hope-Swamped in Gore
Mortal Decay-A Gathering of Human Artifacts and Sickening Erotic Fanaticism
Monstrosity-Millenium
Sinister-Hate

Might be a stretch to put in Cadaver ...In Pains but I think it is underrated.

Good call, though I prefer the debut.

it's great album, but I think it's fairly rated, as I always see people heaping praise on it.

A few older melodic death classics:

In Flames' debut is a great bit of early melodic death metal. A lot more black metal than their later stuff, but with the catchy melodies and rock drumming that characterize a lot of their stuff. There are some standouts like Clad in Shadows, Behind Space, and Upon an Oaken Throne, but it's a very consistent album throughout.

Amon Amarth's third album gets lost in the shuffle a lot, being the third of four albums that look and sound fairly similar, but it's got some really really strong songwriting and some killer riffs. The last 3 songs sorta form a single story, which is cool. Viking as fuck.

This is a newer one and likely to prove controversial, but I stand by it. The songwriting is tight and the riffs are snappy. I feel like these guys get a lot of hate because their logo lumps them in with the retrothrash crowd, which is decidedly not what Skeletonwitch is about. The core is thrash, but there are elements of melodic black, death, and old school speed metal floating around here. I suspect a lot of people here haven't given the Witch a fair chance. Do it.

Snakes for the Divine just fucking crushes. Am I the only one who gets HoF? Wake up, sheeple!

An all-time classic album? No. It's pretty good, though, but it also gets a reasonable amount of love so I'm not even sure it's overlooked.

I wouldn't say Release From Agony or The Voice of Steel(i always thought it was their most well known album) are overlooked really. Maaaaybe StarGazer.

Beyond the Permafrost is fucking awesome. Definitely cracks my top 10 "modern" thrash albums. But it's the best album from one of the most popular thrash bands of today ... I wouldn't call that one overlooked either really. Also, i wouldn't say speed, but Maideny NWOBHM riffs is a huge part of their overall sound.

When i think of criminally overlooked, i think of Hexen ...

Better than every single thrash metal band today, outside of maybe Vektor. Pretty sad that they had to call it quits.

Skeletonwitch is a band that was popular for a bit, received a big and sudden backlash, and are just now recoverying again today.

No one ever mentions these guys

you're kidding, right? It's maybe not so talked about now, but I remember when this album came out a decade ago (god that makes me feel old) this whole board was shitting itself with praise of how amazing and groundbreaking it was. I feel that some of the albums in this thread aren't necessarily overlooked but rather forgotten or lost among the constant waves of music being released. Sometimes keeping up with the classics has a dilemma with keeping up with what's new. I put on Mgla's With Hearts Towards None the other day and forgot how fucking amazing it was...

You could say the same about half the albums mentioned in this thread. No one talks about this album these days. It's still fantastic (as are the following two). It's 'overlooked'.

The Crusher and The Avenger are cool albums. Better than OSFTGH, even if it does have a cooler title.

The drummer from In Flames had/has (dunno if their 'reforming' will come to anything) a great band in the 90s.

... In Pains and Necrosis are great albums. Definitely under appreciated.
