Alternative 4 is a pretty bad album. I'm not sure why people like it. I do think A Fine Day to Exit and A Natural Disaster are pretty good.

Absolutely not. Actually the mind boggles that you could regard Alternative 4 as their best. It's like Anathema's equivalent of Metallica's black album.

Alternative 4 flows nicely and I find it their most emotional and desperate release. Judgement is a close 2nd.

Fragile Dreams is also one of my favorite songs. If you're looking for the same atmospheric feeling in Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, I think you should try :

Paradise Lost - Icon, Draconian Times (my favorite album ever)
My Dying Bride - The angel and the dark River, like gods of the sun (the song "For my fallen angel" is a masterpiece)
