ANUS.com?

SSMT used to be decent but the updates have been incredibly sparse for the past year or so. The site is pretty much dead.

Personally I rarely bother with reviews anymore. I prefer to just download things to try them out and see for myself if it's good. It takes more effort, but atleast you have judged it first hand instead of having to rely on someone else's judgement/opinion (and I think the vast majority of reviews suck).

One thing to consider about many reviews today, ANUS included, is that they are intended for people already familiar with the album, not prospective consumers. Do they really think people going to the site haven't heard Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and In The Nightside Eclipse yet? So the emphasis is less on describing the music and more on artistic value and maybe what the music evokes in that particular listener. This should be a perfectly good approach, and I like reviews that do this. The ANUS reviews are still way too bogged down in thesaurus-speak to be useful in this regard even.

The Chasm
Actually The Chasm is only praised by many of the site's devotees, but it's not officially supported by the anus administration. Presumably, it's got something to do with their material being cheesy and not up to par with their previous incarnation Cenotaph.

If nothing else(the site's deficiencies aside), the Dark Legion Archive is home to many high-quality bands.

translation: "prozak doesn't like it"

my personal favorite impenetrable prozak moment is when he referred to deathspell omega as the pantera of black metal

:erk: good band but somewhat overhyped

I think he also voiced criticism against Ulver and Arcturus("send them back to fucking africa": were his exact wiords if I'm not mistaken:lol:)

ulver play "jewish melodies"

Did prozak say that? He's utterly full of shit, and his review for Nattens Madrigal attests to that.

I'd say the best thing about anus.com is their ability to find more depth and content in the music they review, than what is actually there or intended to be there by the artists.

a bunch of extermists. Waste of time. Its seems that the reviews are all the same

first album-GREAT
second-AMAIZING BEST WORK EVER or GREAT ALBUM
thrid album-good album
forth album-this is what happens when a artest looses interest

they are full of crap

I know, it's like you need to have a dictionary in your lap (or a site pulled up, whichever you prefer) to read those damn things. How are you supposed to take a review seriously when the whole time it sounds like the writer is just trying to be smart instead of actually giving a review?

Yeah, because all the good reviews go like "This album came out last week and the riffs are cool and the drumming is really fast so go out and buy it!"

The site is good. It's a lot better than this site. The important thing about that site is that it's honest, whether you agree with what they say or not. It doesn't whore itself out with banners and band links to the highest bidders, so it can fully endorse bands based on the music. Their FAQ is the most comprehensive writing of metal available on the net.

And what exactly is wrong with being elitist?

Spinoza Ray Prozak is the Plato of serious writing on metal: whether you agree or disagree with him, you eventually have to engage with the ideas he has articulated. If there's a site that has done more to raise the profile of metal and champion the bands that really matter, I haven't found it yet.

Being overly pretentious in your vernacular is quite abhorrible; that was his point about A.N.U.S.
When reading someone's opinion on another subject, one doesn't typically like to have to translate every word being said...

edit:
Plato is also extremely overrated, I prefer the 'down to earth' view of reality myself.

lol. ok,

if you dont know what is wrong with being an "elitist" (based on the UM.com definition) there is something wrong with you. elitists would have you believe albums like in search of sanity, show no mercy, piece of mind, symbolic, ride the lightning, rust in peace, morningrise etc. have no artisitic validity and are therefore worthless. whereas shit albums such as hvis lyset tar oss (30 mins of distorted keyboard fuzz and 1 decent song) are the greatest things to be bestowed upon metal.

k, nothing wrong with that.
