I'm in the market for a mountian bike. Just started doing my research, so I don't know much of fuckall just yet. I'm in the market for both, a male and female bike. Anyone know much?

Excelent entry-level budget bike! haha.

But seriously, what are you gonna be using it for, trails, jumps, downhill, singletrack, crosscountry, just cruisin around, etc?

Just cruising around and trails to start off with. I'm new so I'm obviously not gonna be doing advanced stuff with it just yet. I'm looking for something maybe used or on clearance for around $500. Mtbr.com is a great site that I just discovered today. I have been reading a little over there today.

yup, and www.pinkbike.com is great, post on the forums there to find stuff out, or use search function.

nsmb.com has good reviews of bikes and parts as well.

I'd reccomend looking at a hardtail to start off, you also learn right ot start. :p Then get a fully and start with the truly insane shit. For bonus points, take your old hardtail out on the truly insane shit! :D

i was into it somewhat ... never had a full suspension bike ... but went through in order ... a Mongoose, Raleigh, Kona, Cannondale and now have a Jamis hybrid kind of road/urban mix bike (not for offroad)

I would recommend looking at Kona or Gary Fisher bikes at your price range ... although Raleigh makes a great very underrated beginners bike, the M80, with great parts and all for about $450-$500 new.

I really miss beating the shit out of my bike in the woods.

Brodie and Norco > Kona imo. But thats cause both of those companies are canadian. And Brodie has one of my best buddies sponsored and they often bring out prototype rides to my local shop and let us TRY and break em.

hardtails kick ass. however, they have been a niche market for about a decade now so youd be hard pressed to find a hardtail that wasnt made specifically for racing and doesnt cost $2000. cannondale's F series is a good place to start. youre still gonna pay alot for a handmade USA bike but the frame alone is worth the price. they also make female-specific bikes. dunno much about them though.
youll find the konas and specializeds, etc are cheaper but theyre made in taiwan. good bikes though.
i really dont know what to tell you. if you get a hardtail, soon youll be wishing you had that money to put into a fully. but then when you have a fully youll be wishing you had that money to put into a superlight ellsworth hardtail race bike. it never ends.
myself? after having my hardtail stolen in 2004, im getting a cannondale prophet this spring. the new "trail" bikes are supposed to be the best of both worlds. guess ill find out.

oh yeah, and just fyi, shimano makes the most reliable components but SRAM is closing in. last time i checked the shimano continuum went like this: acera, alivio, deore, LX, XT, XTR (from low to high). LX serves virtually every purpose. the Saint stuff would be for freeriding and shit. i dont know much about that.

haha. My hardtail bike complete package was $900 canadian dude. They're hardly a niche market. i recommend getting a nice hardtail, not an XC hardtail, but something a bit beefier.

yeah that one pretty much rules if you can get it for the price you are willing to spend ...

Norco = best budget freeride.
