fwiw, doomcifer said he just wanted to "ride around". i didnt get the impression he and his gf were going to be doing hardcore trail riding and 4 foot drops in downtown providence. why on earth would he need one of the bikes you posted?

I assumed he was starting with basic trails to get used to a bike and moving on up to real mountain biking eventually.

Also. a 30 lb bike isn't that bad. Mine is 36. It's light as fuck. I rode a prototype of Josh Bender's current hardtail. 56 lbs. Bitch to lug up a hill, otherwise super easy.

i already knew that about you. i never said a critical word. i was pointing out that thats not what doomy is interested in. you guys in turn say shit like im fucking wrong, im insane, etc. when its you guys steering him in the direction of 40 pound freeride bikes.

dude. 30lbs and 40lbs are very differernt. I never tried to steer him toa 40 lb freeride bike. The Kona Shred is a dirt jumper, the Omega is a heavy-ish duty XC bike.

and for the record. I called you information insane. Not you. You can get nice hardtails with good components for $1200 canadian. I know thats out of his pricerange. BUt it's easy enough to pickup the frame and throw on some non-high-end components.

i think maybe youre forgetting that doomy lives on the east coast and that the riding there is completely different than where you live. tully lives there too but apparently he does hardcore urban riding stuff as hes told me as much before.
other than riding around town, doomy probably has access to trails that dont have huge drops, dowhills, etc. thusly he would be better off with a fast bike. ie NOT something that weighs in at over 25 lbs. youre steering him into something very specific and youre saying im insane for trying to keep him away from 35 pound konas

yeah. Wasn't ACTUALLY his, but it was a prototype model for it. They said they'd sponsor anyone who could break the frame. Even bender hasn't done that yet.

I didn't mean to poke you or anything, I have a very light schwinn homegrown XC Hardtail, that cost around 700 dollars. Theres definitly hardtails for 500 dollars that fit right into what hes going for.

Freeride bikes are definitly the best all 'round bikes though, so it isn't completely un-called-for to recomend them to somone just starting out who probobly wants to try all sorts of different terrain.
