Anybody into Mountain Biking?

yeah. Wasn't ACTUALLY his, but it was a prototype model for it. They said they'd sponsor anyone who could break the frame. Even bender hasn't done that yet.

Probobly has broke himself quite a few times, as usual.

dude. 30lbs and 40lbs are very differernt.
agreed. the difference between 25 and 30 is even more so. it depends on the type of riding youre gonna do. my last bike wieghed somewhere around 23 pounds. i cant imagine riding something heavier. climbing's hard enough as it is. i'd like to try a freeride bike sometimes though. looks fun.

Freeride bikes are definitly the best all 'round bikes though, so it isn't completely un-called-for to recomend them to somone just starting out who probobly wants to try all sorts of different terrain.

jah. I've raced XC, downhill, dual slalom and dirt jumping comps on my bruzza. Which i basically cobbled together using the stock components from my first bike, a 1999 Rocky Mountain DH Race.

@Tully - Of course

@DG - Climbing isn't that hard. Or maybe cause I live surrounded by mountains i'm used to it. And trust me, it's not that bad to ride a 40lb Downhill rig 10km up the mountain. 24% grade or so.

I didn't mean to poke you or anything, I have a very light schwinn homegrown XC Hardtail, that cost around 700 dollars.
one of my all-time favorite bikes actually. what year is it?

haha. we woulda come together anyway. I see where he's coming from, it's his price figures that are incorrect.
i think i said that hed be hard-pressed to find a *good* one for his price point. not that they dont exist. something about being made in taiwan blah blah blah i dont even remember anymore :tickled:

all of you are fucking wrong  ... this thread has become super hilarious.

XC hardtails are around 25-30lbs ... I don't know where the fuck you got 40lbs from ... even in the $500 range ... and Doomcy looks like a preatty meaty dude anyway ...

i think you guys are confusing the more consumer term "mountain bike/ing" to the really serious shit some of you guys do.

yeah. In the end. I think doomy should just go buy a walmart "mountain bike". When I think mountain biking. I usually think XC, urban, skate park, DH, freeride or DJ. Not "the local park paths".

some freeride and dh bikes weight upwards of 40 pounds. anything less and they would break.
edit: @ lurch

agreed. but its depressing to think of him buying something like that.

SOME. not all. Most freeride/DH bikes are in between 30-40 lbs. Most freeride hardtails are almost dead on the 30lb mark. 30lbs is NOT hard to ride around.

less than that and you are looking at an XC bike, which locks you into XC. They aren't designed for ANYTHING else, meaning if doomy wanted to experiment he'd have to get a new bike. Thats why i'm reccomending he get something freeride-ish. Because you can be DECENT at everything. I used to use my "30 pound omg impossible to ride around" bike to commute to work, friends houses, etc. I put a hell of a lot of milage on that thing OFF the trails, just riding on the road. It's not hard.

edit; yes. those walmart bikes piss me off. "poser" rigs I call em. For all the little kids that think that makes em cool. I love showing those fagz up.

also ... if he will do a lot of riding "around town" that Kona he pointed out is the wrong choice then ... I know some dual suspension bikes have lockouts now for the rear shocks ... but those specific downhill looking ones will make him yoyo like the Pillsbury doughboy on the street ...

then again ... this is what I would get right now as an all purpose solid entry level bike ... that will surely last for semi hard riding ... no fucking jumping in the air and stuff ... a Giant from the NRS series ... not sure if they make those still.

yeah, i think i said the latest rash of "trail" bikes are supposed to be the best of everything. but i dont have one so i dunno

edit: agreed 30 pounds is not that bad. youre talking about hardtails right?

i seriously thought about getting one of these relatively heavy hardtails awhile back but after riding such a fast XC bike for so long, i got scared. or greedy. or something. meanwhile, i continue to go bikeless so im lame all around.
