I've listened to the new album 5 times now trying to have it grow on me. It isn't growing. In fact, it's quite boring. In fact, I don't like it. At all. What a let down. It looks like Quintessence and Empiricism remain the best efforts the band has ever given and most likely will. Perhaps they're just out of ideas? It happens with bands. But man, how disappointing.
Anyone want to tell me what happened to Borknagar?

The Olden Domain is better than Empiricism, and maybe even Quintessence in my opinion.

the old Borknagar is gone, they are not much black metal anymore. They are progish now and and not for the narrow minded black metal fan anymore. The band is hardly out of ideas, in fact this a new beginning for Bork.

I really like their first four albums. I don't know if I would be able to fully accept Empiricism and the following albums of I gave them a real try...

Yeah, but I really think they spent most of their good ideas. I disliked Epic except for a few interesting portions, and Universal doesn't sound any better to me.
They really nailed the science fiction/apocalyptic sound with Quintessence, and since then they haven't been able to capture that sound again. They either need to seriously consider that aesthetic, or else go back even further to the arcane/pagan folk-influenced thing they went for with the first three records.
EDIT: Empiricism was cool because (in my opinion) it went for a hybrid of their older and newer themes/aesthetics. Not every track is memorable, but there are several awesome ones. Since then they just haven't done anything interesting though.

haha oh yea that's it. the new album is just too 'sophisticated' to understand.
in fact, nothing is sophisticated about it. it isn't challenging, it isnt engrossing. it's just....bad.

I only like(like might be an understatement though) their first three albums,they lost me after that.I think they tried to hard to be proggy and unlike Enslaved it just did'nt work too well for them.I'm sure there are those who'd disaggree.
