What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse
Diversity is what makes extreme metal so great. Many black metal bands have such excellent clean vocals that it wouldn't be the same without it. However, growling vocals are pretty much the definitive characteristic between metal and death metal, just look at how many people do not consider Slayer to be true death metal just because Tom Araya doesn't growl. I could go on and on, so I'll stop and answer the question.
Black metal: clean vocals are good, and often times very necessary. Think of the song When from Opeth - My Arms... Your Hearse. When that mamoth clean vocal comes in from the silence to begin the outro... WOW.
Death metal: without a doubt, absofuckinlutely NOT. Cannibal Corpse with anything less than garbled vocals? No thanks.
