Audiogalaxy... Gone!?!

You all say that mp3's help bands like Opeth and Vintersorg. I don't have any statistics or anything but I believe that that people who download full albums far surpasses number of people like us who sample a few mp3's....

I think the point here is that if it wasn't for AG... MOST OF US WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT THESE 2 ARTISTS SOUND LIKE IN THE FIRST PLACE, THUS GETTING US TO FORGET ABOUT EVER HEARING ABOUT THEM AND NOT BUYING ANY CDS ANYWAY.

From the first post it seemed that if a record company or artist is happy for their music to be shared then they can contact audiogalaxy and have sharing enabled.

Anyhow u guys should check out the dc hub metalalbums.dyndns.org, lots of stuff on there.

Fucking hell ay. That, like most fellow metal heads, was my main source to find new and upcoming bands. Oh well, looks like im gonna have to start buying cd's directly off the net before hearing them. Hmm, this should be interestingg

:P

Well shut the fuck up until you have the statistics

Well aren't you saying the same thing as far as your position? How many exceptions do you make? For what? My issue is individuals justifying to themselves with little regard to the people whose blood, sweat, and yes, money, went into all of this.
with the difference that once the possibility comes up for me to spend realistic money on CDs, and the transfer of this money to the artist is guaranteed, i will buy the music legally, and Opeth's "Still Life" will be one of the very first records i will buy. i do care for this, otherwise i wouldn't bother to enter the argument.

I don't know much about the Ukraine at all. Why ISN'T there an avenue to get albums through legitimate means there in proportion to the local economy? Isn't that a more important issue?

From everything I read, Russia has a crappy economy too but there are several labels there that properly license and release albums and they certainly couldn't do so if there was no one to buy them.
re: the underlined text. some legal shit is sold here on tapes for a sensible price, but limited mostly to pop bands, Metallica, Apocalyptica and Marilyn Manson. no underground music distribution, zero! Russia is Russia, but Ukraine is like a big provincial shithole in this regard. even stuff legally released/distributed in Russia is impossible to get here.

Theres one thing about Audiogalaxy that stands out from other forms of music -sampling:

YOU are interested in the music. Its YOU that initiates the search. I often went on audiogalaxy and got off hours later with a whole new list of bands which i was to go and check out later.

Sit down and watch a MTV style video-clip show, or flip through a music mag, and you'll have all sorts of shit thrown at you, in an attempt to get you to pay for their music. Here, other people select what you hear and read about, reviewers review what THEY want you to hear.

I think there are situations where downloading is perfectly legitimate. For example, I downloaded a bunch of bonustracks from some of my favourite bands. I mean, am I supposed to spend my money on CDs that I already got, just because of one song that might not even be *that* great?!? Am I supposed to feel guilty when I download that one song by some mainstream band that I happen to like?

Some people don't seem to have an idea of how hard it is to find certain tracks. I downloaded Agallochs first demo as there's simply no other way to get it, unless you pay $30 or more on e-bay when the demo pops up every other year - without knowing if you'll actually get your moneys worth, since you could never listen to it in the first place. Most people who got the stuff you're looking for won't make a copy for you unless you have something interesting to trade. I don't have much stuff to trade, I don't even have an internet connection at home, nor equipment for burning CD-Rs! I don't know shit about all this file sharing stuff and I don't get a daily shitload of promos (not anymore;)) . I can do without all this, but when it comes to trading I'm fucked.

I often go to CD stores and check out new albums, download sound samples, read magazines, talk with friends etc. - but that won't help me a whole lot finding old and rare stuff. AG has really helped me quite a bit in this respect...and that's a point I almost never hear...

MP3 itself is not evil. I don't like it personally, but I'm not going to go to an official site and think they're distasteful for offering full MP3 files. But the potential is there to completely destroy the creation of music on any real scale if it really comes down to less and less people buying the discs (and as more people get broadband and newer and higher quality soundfile formats become available...) and that's what I'm really afraid of.
MP3S DESTROYING THE CREATION OF MUSIC! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT. GO FORCE YOUR GIRLFRIEND TO HAVE ANOTHER ABORTION.
