I dont think Martin could do blast beats... he's awesome, but Ive never heard him do anything even remotely resembling a blastbeat. I'd love to see what kind of riffs Mikael could do over blastbeats though. Just curious. Theyd probably sound like Morbid Angel since he's a big fan.

I rekon Master Apprentices may have benefited from a bit of Pete Sandoval's (pretentious as fuck) superblasts. After all, it pretty much serves well as a tribute to Morbid Angel.

He was in a black metal band, of course he can do blastbeats

Hmmm I dunno. Do you know what a blastbeat is? The BM band he was in was pretty weak- just fast dbl bass. MEH. I'd like to see him do some blast's ala Pete Sandoval or Derek Roddy. He's amazing all around, just I don't think he's ever done any on record. Not even Amon Amarth- that was all fast double bass. If you know for sure he does them, and have proof- link us up!:Spin:

Yeah I know what blasts are, but I haven't heard Requiem Aeternam, I was just assuming. I have heard that he has done blasts live a couple times in between songs just for the hell of it, and that they were pretty fast.

Derek Roddy-style drumming wouldn't fit Opeth at all. Sandoval comes closer, but even on MA-influenced Opeth tracks, I can't think of a good place for blastbeats.

I just don't think Opeth-esque riffs can work over blasts, which sterilize syncopation.

I think I saw Gene Hoglan doing some of these " blastbeats".

Blastbeat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A blastbeat is a repetitive series of kick, snare and hat combinations that usually mock the intensity of a machine gun in sound. This method is used to create a forceful climax or sometimes is the basis of an entire song. Used widely in Death Metal and Black Metal, it symbolizes the brutal sound that these two genres(and relating subgenres) bring forth.
