As most of you can see, Opeth is now becoming more "mainstream." Yes, I know, they are far from actually being considered mainstream but they have been getting more popular over the past 2 or 3 years. I guess this mainly pertains to the long time fans: Do you think its GREAT that Opeth are getting more popular and more and more people are discovering them, or do you wish that they didn't get so popular and remained pretty underground. Its pretty clear with this new tour that they're going on with all these bands like Lamb of God and stuff. I mean, I think its great that more people are discovering their music and they are making more money but I also kind of dread all these nu-metal/hot topic/mall rat kids coming up to me if I'm wearing an Opeth t-shirt and asking me if I got the new Slipknot CD...

I don't have a problem with Opeth becoming more popular. But only if it's due to more people listening, not the band changing their sound.

And I don't consider Damnation to be a change in sound - it was a project, a concept, an experiment. Nothing more. It is not the new direction of Opeth.

The obvious example is Metallica, who put out 3 great albums with little attention. But then they had the video for One and all hell broke loose. Suddenly they were getting attention, and they liked it. But, the problem came when they changed their sound to further please the fans. They will deny it till their deaths, but I do not believe that they are still "doing their own thing for themselves."

I don't see Opeth changing to please the mainstream fanbase. If the fans come to them - fine. If not - fine. They have at least one life-long fan that they will never need to change for.

You forgot an "in the middle" option.
I think its great that they're getting more attention, they certaintly deserve it after all of the great music they given us.
However, I don't appreciate the type of fans they seem to be catering to. But, we can also hope that Opeth will bring more "Core" kiddies around to extreme music and the underground scene...

i still dont think Opeth will necessarily appeal to anyone under the nu-metal moniker just because they are a heavy band. Lots of kids into slipknot and the like, enjoy very linear straightforward stuff...like slayer and pantera. Opeth may not always appeal to those kind of kids due to being more diverse, having longer songs, and of course quite a bit of clean guitar and vocal parts. I dont really think anyone will like Opeth because they feel they should...and anyone enjoying the band because they enjoy the music...deserves to be able to listen to the band without a bunch of elitest twats telling them otherwise simply because they dont like the kid's slipknot shirt or something like that.

if you have a problem with people aproaching you because of an Opeth shirt you are wearing.....THEN DONT WEAR AN OPETH SHIRT. ;)

Yea I guess the "I don't care" would be in the middle because you could go either way. I guess thats where I would be. I'll always be a fan no matter what either. I was just wondering what everybody else thought.

@NineFeetUnderground: You're not reffering to me as an elitist twat are you?

As long as Opeth continue in the tradition of never making video's, and rarely making a song shorter than 10 minutes, they probably won't be in danger of getting too much radioplay. If they ever get played on Sea FM (Shitty local commercial station) and hailed as a "great new band", I may have to kill someone.

As long as they don't change their style, sound, and overall genre...someone said if they continue doing what they've done(with obvious progressions), and fans come...sure that would be great. Just don't turn into a mainstream act ala Metallica to bring them in.

there are more votes for "no" than i thought.

personally i don't give a flying fuck. i voted for "yeah let them get mainstream" because then more people would be into this great music. i think Opeth is independent enough not to care what their fans think and won't sell out, so more popularity could be a good thing.

TBH I think their popularity will shrink a lot when people realise that the next album won't be Damnation 2... but irrespective I like what I like, I don't care who else likes it. I met my GF at a Nightwish gig and I'd happily see them again, no matter how many 12 year old shits I'd have to barge through to get to the front, and I don't like Nightwish as much as Opeth, not by a long shot.

Long and short: I don't give a flying fuck

As long as Opeth keep their head straight, popularity shouldn't pose a problem. Quality of music should never be a function of the level of popularity a band has. Unfortunately for the majority of popular bands, that is the case. :(

I absolutely have to agree with you on this.
Cheers.

I'm with everyone else who said they could care less. My other favorite band is Led Zeppelin which I believe is the 2nd best selling artist/band of all time, and it doesn't bother me at all.
Sure I think it's kinda nice to have this nice underground band to worship because it makes you feel a little more intimate, but as long as Opeth sticks with making good music and headline touring I won't mind.

So how many of you are going to start removing your Opeth tattoos?

No, I won't be listening to them if they go and change to please the mainstream. I will burn my opeth cd's if they become
o'tallica.
