What's the best way to mix backingtracks AND metronome to the drummers ears and only the backingtracks to the PA-system?

Hook up an audio interface with at least 2 sets of stereo outputs to a laptop running your DAW of choice. Set the output of the master fader to outputs 1 and 2, and the metronome to 3 and 4. Only hook up output 1 and 2 to the PA.

The easiest way to do this is to use an RCA cable and split the stereo so the drummer gets the metronome on one of the channels and the other channel goes to the mixer for backing track. To do this; go to your DAW and pan a metronome click 100% left (or right) and the backing tracks 100% right (or left) and then just render it. Then u can just play it with your phone or MP3 player. This is what you need: http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/ljud...audio/rca-till-3-5-mm/anslutningskabel-p37218, http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/ljud-bild/kablar-adaptrar/6-3-mm/adapter/adapter-6-3mm-rca-p39191, http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/ljud...-audio/adapter/adapter-3-5mm-rca-ha-ho-p39192, http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/ljud...-5-mm/adapter/3-5-mm-dubbelhona-stereo-p39189

The easiest way is probably to have all the backing track and metronome in one project in your DAW and then just have some pauses between each song. I've not done this but it should work if you practice it before.

This seems so complicated, there must be an easier way to do this..
Thanks for your help, I will mess around in my DAW til I find a way that works good!

Just have all the backing track WAV files on one session in your daw with a few seconds of empty space in between each file.
Make sure the tempo map matches the tempos on each WAV file in the session.
Before every Wav file have 2 bars of precount so you know when to start playing.
At a gig, Press play and wait for 4 clicks, then on the hi hat or click your sticks together another 4 clicks so the rest of the band knows when to come in.
At the end of the song press stop.
move the play courser to the next song, repeat.

Honestly, this isn't complicated at all! It seems harder than it is, once you've got the twist, it's easy.

1- Routing click and backing tracks to one output
2- Routing backing tracks to second output
3- Enjoy

Drummer uses output 1, output 2 in PA system. Where's the hard part? ;)

This is what I do, but then I bring all of my tracks into ableton and put them in the playlist view in order. I assign each track to a button on my DJ midi controller, and have my UX2 with the Headphones out going to the drummer and then the L out going to the P.A. The tracks are only in mono but Its not like it makes a difference at most venues.

move the play courser to the next song, repeat.

The only problem i have with this method is that it looks a little unprofesional to have the drummer tinkering with an open laptop at a gig. At least that's my opinion :p Do you think there is anyway to assign a midi controller to set the cursor to certain markers in Reaper? Then you could for example hit button 3 and it takes you to the start of song 3? I would love to use reaper live if this is possible.

I just saw a video of Meshuggah's guitar tech explaining their backing tracks and they control the song switching with a midi keyboard. At around 13:30
