My friend exposed me to both Porcupine Tree and Opeth simultaneously last year, and I love them BOTH so much that I crave exposure to bands that fans of Opeth think are absolutely essential for any CD collection.

(Also: my first post, so hello to all)

i dont agree with quite a few of the recommendations so far....at least not in conjunction with the word "essential". but as far as essential albums in semi relation to Opeth or for Opeth fans:

enslaved
katatonia
ulver
yes
genesis
cynic
morbid angel
king crimson
nick drake
bathory

What makes Nick Drake "essential" then? 'Cos I got his Pink Moon and I don't find that CD so great. I'd like to know from you and from other Opeth fans what you think about Nick Drake.

practically unmatched in his melancholy folk work. especially his "bryter layter" album. not to mention how much of his playing has inspired mikael anyway. thus: essential.
