I'm gonna get flogged like the cargo for not owning these, but are they really worth owning from a purely musical standpoint, ignoring the massive importance they played in helping create black metal?

And I still don't own any Darkthrone. :dopey:

They're simple as hell, but the aggression and energy is the main draw. I like them quite a bit, and Under the Sign of the Black Mark was where the sound started to change toward something more mature.

Definately man. I think they embody first wave black metal in its entirety so rocking, so evil, just fucking awesome. THe Return I think is my fav.

Nah you could do better. I don't see why you wouldn't just explore the bands on this:

Bathory were much better at the Viking vibe -- they were surpassed in the black thrash vein many times over by other bands / hidden gems. Just ask Fenriz, or read our interview. It's pretty educational.

While we're on the subject of 1st wave BM, should I get and Celtic Frost. Venom is cool and everything, but I just have no desire to listen to them. I do, however, love early Mercyful Fate. Would I like Celtic Frost? If so, which ones should I get?

On a slightly related note, the version of "Freezing Moon" on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is fucking terrible compared to the one on Live in Leipzig. The version on that compilation wasn't quite as good either, but much better than the one on DMDS. Only listened to it once, doesn't Dead do vocals on that comp. track too?

Really? I was listening to Live in Leipzig the other day, thinking that I should throw it on the trade list because I never listen to it, but I guess I should hold on to it a while longer. It's such a pristine digipak too.

@Nate - we had a thread on Celtic Frost here once...it was a tad amusing. :loco: Otherwise, To Mega Therion all the way! Or at least listen to "Tears in a Prophet's Dream" since it's SO good and you've probably already heard different versions of "Circle of the Tyrants" a million times now.

DMDS fucking rules, but it would literally surpass all other music if Dead was around to do the vocals :( (even if I like Atilla)

Yes, the DMDS version really had me cringing as I had heard the Leipzig version first. Dead is simply the man and his vocal performance on that song is so emotional and amazing it will just leave you wondering "what the fuck?" everytime you hear any other version. You must keep it. I honestly don't know what the fuck this crap Attila is doing is suppose to be. :err:

Yeah, I often wonder why the band settled on Attila (he's still cool) even though there were a slur of super awesome vocalists available. I mean, the album is still great and stuff, but I wonder why they favoured his style over anything else.

Off topic: So Satyrcon's first three albums are worth getting, yes? And the split with Enslaved is good as well?

On Topic: Attila's performance in Aborym is amazing.

Hmm... The Shadowthrone and Dark Medieval Times are usually a hit or miss with people. I'd reccomend listening to some tracks before you make the purchase. I can, however, reccomend their third album to everyone.

Mother North = <3 <3 <3

This thread is pretty cool as I'm going SUPER OLD-SCHOOL these days and buying a bunch of this stuff.

Listening to Ulver's Bergtatt now. I'd like for someone to inform me as to why I was never told that Garm could ACTUALLY SING! That album rules all kinds of ass and he doesn't use that god awful drone from the Arcturus albums and Borknagar I have.

Still need to get Aborym, but as always, it's on a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG list of items.
