What's your favourite song that ends an album? I think it's just as important as an intro song, since the closing notes of the final song will stay in your mind after the album is complete.

So, name your favourite closing song, and reasons why. It could be Opeth, or anything else.

So, let's have at it!

There's a ton that I like, but Third Eye by TOOL always leaves me satisfied.

But, to list a few others, Hurt by NIN, Eclipse and Shine On (part 7??) by Floyd, and Epilogue are great too :)

Perennial Quest by Death absolutely rules. The album makes sure you get your ass severely kicked, then leaves you hanging with one of the most depressing riffs ever. I think that rules!

Id say Epilogue and Credence for Opeth. Its just fucking beautiful.

To Live Is To Die - Metallica
Its the same as the begining of the song. Again, very beautiful melodic acoustic guitars.

Wish You Were Here - its just the wind at the end...
Comfortably Numb - Well that would be for the whole 2 minutes long solo.
Hey You - Together We Stand, Divided We Fall (that says it all)

there are certainly others....

NP: Enslaved - Loke

the song BWP just blows me away. the last 4 minutes are possibly my favorite 4 consecutive minutes of any opeth song. and "the sun sets forever over blackwater park" is a great way to end the album.

Some of my favorite closers:

Opeth - Epilogue, To Bid You Farewell, Apostle in Triumph

Dark Tranquillity - Of Melancholy Burning

I also agree with Tool - Third Eye...

And definitely Meshuggah - Sublevels

Confessor, you probably misunderstood the question - it wasn't which song ends well, but which song ENDS AN ALBUM well. So, Credence doesn't fit.

Some of my own:

Opeth: Epilogue
Therion: Postludium / Grand Final
Sentenced: The Golden Stream of Lapland
Dark Tranquillity: ...Of Melancholy Burning
Amorphis: My Kantele (acoustic)
The Black League: Night on Earth
In Flames: Whoracle
Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus: Lintu
Metallica: Call of Ktulu

-Villain (too tired to remember more...)

I have four that really stand out:

Yes: Ritual
Dream Theater: Learning To Live
Anglagard: Kung Bore
Opeth: Blackwater Park (the acoustic part is the most haunting piece of music ever created)

That's my personal "last but not least"-list:

Bolt Thrower - Armageddon Bound (I love those guys anyway)
Dornenreich - Mein Publikum - der Augenblick (perfect lyrics)
Empyrium - Ensemble Of Silence (worshipped simplicity featuring a nice crescendo)
My Dying Bride - Black God (pure romanticism)
Opeth - To Bid You Farewell (epic outro for epic BRI :p )
Ulver - Bergtatt - Chapter V
Anathema - hidden track on "A Fine Day To Exit" (hilarious :loco: )

i have to agree with lina, Epilogue is just one of the maddest instrumentals i have ever heard, and am working on learning it at the moment, and BWP is a bloody fantastic song:

Sick liasons raised this monumental mark
The sun sets forever over blackwater park

then that mad acoustic fade out.....

radiohead - ok computer (the tourist)
radiohead - the bends (street spirit (fade out))
opeth - morningrise (to bid you farewell)
pink floyd - meddle (echoes)
jeff buckley - grace (dream brother)
rem - automatic for the people (find the river)
tool - aenima (third eye)
mogwai - young team (mogwai fear satan)

others...

iced earth are clearly the masters of epicness

I agree... i like the ending song on "something wicked this way comes" the best...

others i like: opeth: Blackwater park and epilogue (that one has taken my heart!) and Element des Verbrechens by Subway to Sally.

Queensryche have a pretty impressive catalogue of closing songs:
The Lady Wore Black (EP)
Roads To Madness (The Warning)
I Will Remember (Rage For Order)
Eyes Of A Stranger (Operation: Mindcrime)
Anybody Listening? (Empire)
Someone Else? (Promised Land)

Some of these are timeless classics and among my all-time fav songs.
Even their last two albums, which I think majorly suck, have excellent closing songs: Spool (Hear In The Now Frontier) and Right Side Of My Mind (Q2k)

Another band with great ending songs is Crimson Glory:
Lost Reflection (Crimson Glory) and Transcendence (Transcendence) from their first two albums are stunning masterpieces and Cydonia (Astronomica) from their last cd is a great closer too.

Other favs:
Opeth's To Bid You Farewell, Epilogue and Black Water Park
Dark Tranquillity's The Mind's I (The Mind's I) and ...Of Melancholy Burning (The Gallery)
Dream Theater's Space-dye Vest (Awake)
Anacrusis's Far Too Long (Manic Impressions)
Nevermore's Forever (Dreaming Neon Black)

But to answer the question my favourite of all is Lost Reflection by Crimson Glory. It's one of the most haunting and powerful songs ever made. Everyone should check this song out.
