I've been trying to find a good streaming online station to listen to at work and it seems impossible to find one that plays a lot of bands I like. I found one that seemed awesome, in the bands played description it had Novembers Doom and Anathema but then they started playing that cheesy ass shit like Therion and bands like that are almost worse than listening to country for me.

Obviously people here have similar musical taste but just some of the big bands I like that might help you recommend me a station.

Novembers Doom (obviously), Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Bloodbath, Amon Amarth, The Foreshadowing, Opeth, Saturnus, Draconian, Anathema...

Hey Pat you need to download Winamp. They have some great metal stations in their shoutcast radio section. I stick to the AOL radio metal stations that are on there like Power Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Extreme Alt Rock, and Metal Mosh Pit. Pandora.com is a cool site too where you type in a band name and they play bands that are similar to that band.

I have found SLACKER to be pretty good.
You can type in a band name, and it will create a station with "like" artists.
They are pretty good for the most part.

Avoid the Yahoo one (I think it is LAUNCH.COM).
No matter what band you put in, the next 10 songs will be metalcore.

Thanks Vito, I know of Winamp radio but I shouldn't be running a program all the time on the work pc but that Pandora site seems to be just what I was looking for! Still checking out the features and how it works but so far it seems awesome, thanks!

And thanks for the warning Jasonic, that would definitely drive me crazy.

No prob.
Many years ago, I used to check out this one black metal online stream, but after a couple days, I realized they only had like 50 songs in the loop!

Ya this Pandora thing has made my life so much better at work. My radio in the shop only picked up one station, an 80s and 90s pop station - it's the only station that it could pick up for the last 6 years. Finally sprung for a set of pc speakers and thank god thanks to Vito found Pandora. If I had to hear Rock Me Amadeaus one more time I was going to shoot myself in the face.

If I tried to stream here at work, I would get dinged on my next performance review. They watch for that shit here very closely, because some fuckers stream all day long (mainly newbs who don't know any better) and suck up all the bandwidth from the network. Some guy got tossed out of the office not too long ago for streaming YouTube vids. Not sure what the content was. One time, we put a guy back on a plane to Hamburg because he was streaming porn in one of our conference rooms - now that takes some brass cajones!

It's all good though. My IPod has plenty of primo music to keep me occupied.

Pandora is pretty good but you should also check out Last.fm. It keeps track of everything you listen to, recommends music to you based on that, plus there are radios based on your recommendations, any band, any genre or even a neighbor's radio (people with similar tastes).
