Sad / Depressing music

hope you dont stone me, but i have to admit that downtempo and depressing music has always been closer to my heart than metal. for some reason, its always resonated more with me. here are some of my favs to recommend:

Albums:
Depeche Mode: Songs of Faith & Devotion
Lisa Gerard: Shadow Magnet
The Cure: Bloodflowers
Toad the Wet Sprocket: Dulcinea
Portishead

Singles:
Peter Gabriel: Passion
Sigur Ros: most any
Diary of Dreams: most any
NIN: Hurt, Something I can never Have, The Great Below

GREEN CARNATION - LIGHT OF DAY, DAY OF DARKNESS

Jesus christ what a melancholy absorbtive masterpiece. It's a 56 minute song, and while such questionable aspects as the 4-minute "moaning girl and saxophone duet" (I wish I was kidding :erk: ) could've been cut, overall I absolutely adore it. And +1 to Agalloch, good call James!

Actually Ulver's Shadows of the Sun (their latest work) is perfect when you want to relax and listen to something a bit melancholic.

krohm - the haunting presense

and the most severely depressing music i've ever heard is from:

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows

so check out anything by that freak. haha.

I wouldn't count Shadows of the Sun and Kveldssanger as depressing though :) They're excellent relaxing albums, and SotS has even a christmas-y wibe on it. Red lights in the streets and meters of snow falling quietly from black skies.

A lot of killer stuff there!

I just listening to the Moving Waves album a couple of hours ago, a prog masterpiece! I actually have the original vinyl from the 70's(along with my CD)

I have both too, but since I am from Holland I presume it is a lot easier to find here then in Finland :). That album is pure gold in my opinion, great flowing songs and quite unique atmosphere plus a lot of variation.

Early Camel, oh yes! Snowgoose is one of my all time favourite albums, easily in the top 5.

Early Genesis is killer stuff as well, the Gabriel-era and a couple of albums after that. Gentle Giant is brilliant stuff as well.

I never really got into Gentle Giant, but I think I'll give them another chance. For me Genesis should have called it quits when Gabriel left, I don't like the albums after that. Somehow they miss the edge and excitement that was there in the beginning. The first Steve Hackett album Voyage of the Acolyte is however really great.

As a Finn, I have to recommend old Wigwam albums (Being, their masterpiece) and Tasavallan Presidentti, which is a bit more jazzy than Wigwam.

Thanks for bringing this up, I have heard of Wigwam a couple of times before but never checked them out. Definitely going to do that now.

I see a lot of Doom bands mentioned here I thought this was about bands like anathema, blackfield and Antimatter (sorry for the prog rambling btw :loco:).

If you want some depressing Doomy stuff check out Skepticism (in particular Lead and Aether), Funeral (the last two albums are really great). No one has mentioned Paradise lost by the way :guh:

Maybe those who like the last blackfield album and some of the newer Anathema stuff might also like Saybia from Denmark. Especially their second album "These are the days" has some great melancholic songs. Might however be a bit to poppy for some of you. Catherine Wheel's Ferment album might also be a good one if you are into this kind of music and a big + 1billion for Jeff Buckley. Grace is definitely one of my all time favorite albums.

solitude aeturnus's 'alone' was supposed to be pretty sad.

although it's got high pitched vocals (at least on their debut), lyrically, confessor typically revolves around depression and sadness.

Some of my favorites-

Pink Floyd- Animals
The Sisters Of Mercy- First And Last And Always
Portishead- Dummy
Isis- Panopticon
The Tea Party- Transmission
Tom Waits- Alice
The Elysian Fields- Bleed Your Cedar
Depeche Mode- Songs Of Faith And Devotion
The Cure- Pornography/Disintegration/Bloodflowers

I could go on for a while, I'm sure; I'm a fan of :( stuff. (It seems like every good band with "the" in the name are miserable bastards. )

plus one on portished. it's dreary out today, I should have grabbed dummy for the car.

Nobody has mentioned Dire Straits, not exactly gloomy, but Knopfler certainly has a melancholy side.

Incredible song; Brothers in Arms

Oh and anyone (from the UK) who has seen a John Lewis advert will have heard Ludovico Einaudi, stunning pianist, really sad and mournful.

Another mention of ULVER's Shadows Of The Sun. This album takes me to another place. I haven't heard anything else quite like it (except other Ulver stuff). It's been my favourite "on the train by night" iPod album for a while now. So beautiful.

I listen to a lot of stuff already mentioned, so here's some different shit I like:

Doom:

Evoken
Esoteric
Colosseum
Virgin Black
My Dying Bride (of course)
Paradise Lost

Not so metal...

Karl Sanders - Saurian Meditation (probably the ULTIMATE chill disc, check it out!)
Lorenna McKennit - Everything
Dead Can Dance - Most stuff
Enya - Shepherd's Moon
Delerium - Most stuff
Mortiis - Keiser Av En Dimensjon Ukjent
Dargaard - In Nomine Aeternitatis
Elend - Most stuff

This karl sanders album is so great, took it last summer at wacken and it's amazing.

Plus one to all from loreena mckennit.

Also Tori Amos is great.

I also like a lot those bands:

A Perfect Circle
Anathema
Empyrium
Massive Attack
Portishead
Mar De Grises
Radiohead

Einaudi is brilliant, a background track from a top gear ep really stuck out to me so I got the cd, simply awesome!
