the early stuff was alright until they repeated the formula ad naseum

thats right
I love the first 3 Opeth albums, great music but the albums they did after My arms your hearse...well the magic is gone, I bought still life(nice but not great) and blackwater park(didnt touched my anymore) and the others never heard them...
I just listen to the first 3 ones.

another great band disappears in their own shadow...

anyway my faves this year are:

1. omnium gatherum-years in waste
2. fall of the leafe-volvere
3. cult of luna-salvation
4. eyes of fire-ashes to embers
5. jimmy eat world-futures
6. the great deceiver-terra incognito
7. timo rautiainen & trio niskalakaus-hartes land
8. killswitch engage-the end of heartache
9. in flames-soundtrack to your escape
10. nasum-shift
11.isis-panopticon (great music to drive long distances with your car)

I somehow don't know where to put Opeth... well I had, no... so there was someone I knew who was an Opeth fanatic and listened to it quite often. I didn't say it is bad but nor did I find it 'that' great. At times it was great though, but it could not touch me the way others could, and after listening to it every now and than I found it a bit 'embarrassing'. only after some pause in listening to them could I find it o.k. again.
My arms your hearse and Morningrise I liked much (say in past because I didn't hear them since that). Still life was their first album I heard but was a bit messy and not just for the first listening... and somehow the same goes for Blackwater park, good and not that good songs too (but maybe I have to listen to it more).
to say I like Damnation very much, but it's just something totally different, and when I listen to it I just don't find it Opeth.

Damn, Finius says No chance pal!!!! :(

Why is everybody dissing basket weavers, my brother did it for four years and he could make some pretty willow baskets. It's a shame people diss something that's nice.

I just have to cite some wise words from Katatonia's board.

"ISIS - Panopticon. Bought it a few days ago. Felt it was worth a special mention"
- "Only because it's total shit. Never heard more people wank to a crappier uninspired boring artsy album."

some ppl get it. some don't.
you don't.

I'm now listening to isis oceanic, its not that i dont get it, i do. I dont like it. Sub neurosis attempts a sonic landscaping. dull

neurosis is much more angrier.

isis is more, well, freestyle, if you like.

i don't know if you play some instrument, but, boy, if i could have a band with bunch of guys playing such as those..

oceanic didn't work at me either at the beginning, but l8r worked when i was tired with headphones around 4am

("and eversince i have no sleep...") - hahaha what a lame conclusion :tickled:

cheerz

Since nobody's mentioned it I'd suggest Sigur Ros - ( )

It isn't completely doomy but has a wonderful atmosphere....

Also I didn't see in the Woods mentioned, but I'd recommend giving Omnio a shot. Took me a long time to get into properly but particularly the title (three) tracks are fantastic.

My two cents worth.

This is gonna sound like a joke, but I'm serious, that one dude from Aqua Søren Raasted has a new project called Lazyboy and it's at least interesting. Sort of a poppy GYBE. A bunch of spoken statements to poppy synths, some statements are crap jokes, other semi-deep statements, some odd facts, some bollocks. None of them in any real order. One song with philosophising about a plant (cannabis) being illegal while we're spending millions making sure 80-year-olds can get a boner (viagra), about the obeisity epidemic and so on. Sort of nice at times, at least interesting. I might even end up buying a copy of this album.

Some examples of lyrics (not sure they're correct down to the word):

Someone said to Voltaire: "Life is hard", Voltaire replied "compared to what?"

The biggest lie you can tell yourself is. "When I get what I want, I'll be happy"

Pierced men are better prepared for marriage, they're used to pain and have bought jewelry.

Women who read romance novels have 67 % more sex.

22´% of the time a pizza will arrive quicker than an ambulance in the UK.
