Looking for Depressive music

Finland has many a depressing and melancholy bands, such as:

All the bands but the last sing in finnish, coz english singing finnish bands u might have heard already.

Viikate, really melancholic, mirrors the "finnish" mind-set trough amazing folk styled poetic lyrics. + this song "Korpi" sounds a lot like katatonia in my opinion, around 6min.

Iiwanajulma, a new band, fucking mental

CMX, been around for years. Faith no Mores Billy Gould produced one of their albums

To me to most epic, depressing and melancholic song is the Real thing by Kingston Wall. Perhaps because the singer and song-writer of this band took his own life by jumping off of a church roof after the last album was released. Some say his last album's lyrics depict his soon to come suicide, I dunno. I'll listen to his music all my life.

Well I don't know what flavor of depressive you want, but here is some of everything, all of it is capable of sending you on your way to imminent suicide.
Disclaimer: this music should not be taken with alcohol and must be balanced out with bands that start with "The" and use major chords to convey their angst.

A Swarm of the Sun
Ahab
Battle Of Mice
Black Tape for a Blue Girl
Blake Curtis :)
Bleak
Bohren & der Club of Gore
Cranes
Cult of Luna
Dargaard

Unto Ashes

Great list! I love Unto Ashes, Stoa, Swallow the Sun, Pinback, Cranes (especially their Wings of Joy album!), and Black Tape for a Blue Girl from your list.

First and foremost: Dead Can Dance

And please give Arcana a listen. My god are they awesome and produce some of the darkest music ever made (just listen to Innocent Child or Lament).

Faith and the Muse is hands down one of the most original and dark bands I know of, so they're worth a shot - very mystic with an old-world feel and just perfect lyrics.

Clan of Xymox is also consistantly good and depressing.

For something slow and acoustic, but enough to drag you down (and way down), play some Low (good songs to start you off with would be "Words" and "Kind of Girl" to give you an idea).

Lunatic Soul is another good one - side project of Riverside's singer. Listen to the song "Adrift". It's perfect.

I have ~6500 songs in my library (all legal, and that's a load of dough heh) and just about all of it is depressing. I'll post some more if anyone wants me too.

Resonance Room (Italy)
Mar De Grises (Chile) - especially " The Tatterdemalion Express" - really good album
End Of Green (Germany) "Infinity", "Songs for a dying world", "Last night on Earth"
Antimatter (UK)
Dawn Of Solace (Finland)
Blindead (Poland)
...and:
PORTISHEAD (legend of trip-hop)
Isole, Autumn Tears, Dark Suns, Depressed Mode, Exxasens, Fungoid Stream, Hypothermia, Minsk, Orne, Virgin Black
and makes me especially depressed - Enrique Iglesias, alarm in my mobile every fuckin day

Viikate, really melancholic, mirrors the "finnish" mind-set trough amazing folk styled poetic lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP-vxNz-5YQ + a well thought out video for a single http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr1tDFPpUuw + this song "Korpi" sounds a lot like katatonia in my opinion, around 6min. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz_VQbvokAc

Sara, sometimes compared as the closest thing to Katatonia in Finland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzH6c4xda-k (volume up)

And of course Tenhi (kill yourself right now)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu9YFMuz17U

thanks man, Viikate are really awesome.

Shining....am I missing something with them? I'm not very fond of Kvarforth's attitude and non-ironic rock star posturing (he just strikes me as a douche), plus I'd much rather listen to Bethlehem who did the same thing far better (imo), but more importantly came across as genuinely demented wierd fuckers (because they are), and they did it first.

owned. Not to mention Deinonychus, featuring Marco Kehren (vocals on Bethlehem's SUIZID):

Also I've heard that Bethlehem's latest (a re-recording of SUIZID) sucks because of Kvarforth's guest vocals. so take away more points for that.

Outside of a few doom bands and even fewer black metal bands that do this really well (Mournful Congregation probably being the best at being depressive, for black metal ColdWorld is pretty depressive), I would say the best depressive music usually isn't even metal. Some sad folk songs feel depressing as fuck even if they aren't "crushing." Some of my favorite examples I guess would be Townes Van Zandt's "Black Crow Blues" or Ryan Adams "Why Do They Leave?"

this band is great, thanks for posting!
no problem, they're quite underrated IMO so this seemed the appropriate thread to "spread the word"

more good stuff...

Asylum Party (great coldwave from France)

The Chameleons, one of the finest band's I've ever heard, this thread wouldn't be complete without them

and a bit of a throwback from my childhood, by one of my favourites:

hard not to feel a metric shitload of emotion with a song like that.

you can only archive the ultimate tr00 Kvlt Doomness, wen you survive a full album of Until Death Overtakes Me :p

I think depressive metal is not something like vocals we cannot ear nothing like lurker of chalice of EVERY bands like that. For me it consist to be a clean vocals and melodic riffs..like Katatonia in tonight's decision. This is a real depressive metal. The medley with riff and clean vocals that's the secret to have something very depressive and it give to you the feeling "depressive" and not only a slowly beat and vocal ahhhhhhhh this is not. The goal of this post is to say that and the good way to find real depressive metal is Katatonia. The better exemple for depressive metal are the albums Tonight's decision and Discouraged ones by Katatonia. TGCD is also a little like that but i don't find something depressive in all things i saw in this forum....maybe Anathema for sure.
