Best guitarist today?

Tuff question, like asking me who I'd rather have sex with, Catherine Zeta-Jones or Halle Berry. Anyway, I have to go with Loomis, Mikeal Akerfeldt(after seeing Opeth live) Romeo from Symphony X and Paul Gilbert. Can't forget Al Demiola, Paco De Lucia and John McLauglin. Fuck man, Satriani, Eric Johnson and Roy Buchanan, Stevie Ray Vaughn. So many excellent guitarists. I suggest, go to YouTube and pull up Roy Buchanan and just sit back.

I knew this thread would be infested with shitty shredders.

+1 to Alex Lifeson and Pat Metheny.

All of you who said Yngwie Malmsteen, I laugh in your general direction.

Personally, I don't care how much "talent" someone has. If their music sounds like shit, why does it matter how fast you are?

Malmsteem is far from the best. Muhammed Suiçmez isn't the best, but he's really good and can actually write good music. Of course it's all subjective anyway.

Most of the solo artists, are shit. Sure they can shred but they can't write music to save their sorry-ass lives.

I almost forgot about Blackmore, manymany hails to Ritchie Blackmore for being such a diverse and groundbreaking guitarist, he was ahead of his time like the others I mentioned.

and finally, Pat Metheny....all around 5-star jazz guitarist.

Oh yes! Metheny is way up there. Andy Mckee is an amazing player as well, and I need to throw in Steve Hackett. He is amazingly diverse. Alex Lifeson has been mentioned a few times...when I was a kid, I thought guitar playing began and ended with Lifeson and Tom Scholz. Lifeson is still going strong, continuing to develop, so he belongs at the top as well.

There are SO many great guitarists. Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, RITCHIE BLACKMORE, Jeff Beck, JOHN WILLIAMS...the list goes on and on. As far as "shredders" and/or metal players go, I'd say Loomis, Muhammed and Mikael are all at or close to the top.

For the record, my all-time favorite guitar player is Andres Segovia, but he is no longer with us.

And Tommy Emmanuel is the shit! Holy crap!!!

yeah malmsteen cant play a guitar for shit. it takes no skill to shred. Hell i bet everybody on this board can play better than him.

The epitome of braindead shredhater comments. The entire phenomenon is a trip.

There are some great guitarists around. I'd say for expression and originality... Allan Holdsworth. Nobody else sounds like him. Fredrik Thordendal tries, but fails.

My fave is still Mike (our very own, from Opeth). He has had the most profound impact on my own playing.
