Which do you prefer, and which one is more evil sounding?
I personally listen to death metal, only occasionally so I go with DM.

I'de have to say that I prefer death metal. However, I think it all depends on who's playing it.

As opposed to black metal, I myself prefer Doom metal (my dying bride, soulpreacher etc.)

Man these sub genres get pretty confusing after a while

Strongly agreed.

We had tons of this kind of threads in the past. Why again...?
But then again, we've got tons more of "what's your favorite song" type threads.

I guess the whole satanic thing with black metal is what turns me off more tho that genre. I can handle the more gore and butchery type stuff of DM, actually kind of silly. But I think the whole "burn down a church" with BM is pushing it too far. So maybe BM is more evil.

Easily black metal for me. Bands like Emperor, Taake, Enslaved, Cradle of filth do it for me more. Black metal is also more evil - the only problem i have with a lot of the bands is how they hate christianity so much.. I know it's corrupt yadda yadda.. but honestly, i've just learnt to ignore it. But yeh, burning down churches, actually committing murder, NSBM etc.. Definitely more evil than Death Metal.

THAT WAS A JOKE ABOUT CRADLE OF FILTH BEFORE PEOPLE GO NUTS

Well I just like the music, I dont give a shit about what their beliefs or lyrics are

I prefer Black Metal I guess, but a hefty dose of both. I actually prefer the bastard offsprings of both genres more than the pure ones in a lot of cases! I don't care if they are called sellouts I'd listen to them over the purebreeds any day, but I definatly enjoy those too.

I like Doom too, and to me BM is closer to Doom/Drone than DM, so I bunch those 2 together whilst Thrash and Death Metal seem more akin, and I am not a fan of most Thrash, so yeah, I listen to more Doom/Black than Thrash/Death.

The real question related to Opeth should be what is better, Prog or Jazz? Since those elements are just as important in their music as the Metal side of things! The more under looked elements when it comes to comparing I think!

What? Doom/Drone is much closer to DM for the most part. Most doom is just slowed down death metal with different lyrical content and vocal styles. Play some old My Dying Bride songs at 200% speed and see for yourself what the riffing sounds like.

I can't believe you think prog and jazz are just as important in Opeth's music as metal. There's hardly any jazz influence at all. Prog isn't even a part of their music for the first few albums.

Anyway, I usually prefer black metal, but I like death metal very much too.

People who assume that all black metal is about satan and burning churches are being naive. That's like assuming all death metal bands have the lyrical content of Cannibal Corpse.
