Borderline Black Metal?

Black Metal is a scene, with trendy bands playing trendy music with trendy image. However it's also a style of music, and while a huge proportion of it is pop-black-metal (I'm looking at Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral, Marduk, etc.), being 'extreme' for the sake of being extreme, there is also some absolutely brilliant stuff out there. My absolute top bands have mostly got strong black metal influence, or play black metal themselves - Ikuinen Kaamos, Ne Obliviscaris, Ulver, Drudkh, Negura Bunget, Moonsorrow, Falls of Rauros... I think one should be skeptical, and acknowledge that a huge amount is absolute commercial shite, but also be open minded because some of the most inspiring and beautiful music I have heard has been rooted in black metal.
