Gentle Giant did some pretty weird stuff, although I have only heard a couple of albums. Widely regarded amongst the die hard prog fans.
If you feeling like getting into the whole fusion thing of the seventies,
the Bruford albums are great. Also Jean Luc Ponty-Enigmatic Ocean, and Allan Holdsworth-Metal Fatigue is probably the most accesible.

In a more metal vein Saga the other Canadian prog band.

The usual suspects, Yes, Rush etc.

Enjoy.

Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn
Rush - Exit Stage Left
Genesis - Live
And all the other ones already mentioned

Modern Prog -
A Perfect Circle - Mer De Nomes
Tool - Lateralus
Tool - AEnema
Radiohead - Kid A
Radiohead - OK Computer

Cant suggest Court of the Crimson Kind enough, its ESSENTIAL, along with Red, and Discipline, and hell, ALL Crimson Records. After you need some Yes, Fragile is a Masterpiece, sois Tales from Topographic Oceans. From ELP you need Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery mainly. Also get Hawkwind stuff, and genesis, and peter gabriel and ANYTHING PROG YOU LAY YOUR HANDS ON CUZ PROG ROCKS... Sorry.

Gentle Giant is the ultimate prog band in my opinion. Only the first 8 studio albums though....i.e. Gentle Giant, Acquiring The Taste, Three Friends, In A Glass House, Free Hand, Power and Glory. DON'T GET Missing Piece, giant for a day, last steps....they are bad!!!! There are many obscure bands from late sixties/early seventies that haven't been mentioned yet like Pidgeon s/t, Ars Nova s/t, Atomic Rooster, Renaisance (first album is the only one i like...totally diff personel), Family (entertainment, music in a doll's house), Spirit s/t, Sea Train s/t, Wishbone Ash - pilgrimage, Gong Allan Holdsworth, Mahavishnu Orchestra - inner mounting flame, Gnidrolog, Fruupp, The Nice.

Gentle Giant are indeed awesome. I only have Acquiring the taste, and it's absolubtely awesome. Other than that, everyone's already mentioned KC, ITCOTCK and Red are the best. Then get discipline.

Jethro Tull are good too, but I would only suggest thick as a brick and maybe aqualung.

and of course, Yes. Tales of the topographic oceans and fragile are amazing...

Oh yeah, also 'In search of the lost chord' by the moody blues.
