Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder > :kickass:

Aside from the influence of many many bands and albums, the album that probably made me want to "do" music I ashamedly have to trace back to Europe - The Final Countdown, or perhaps the video for Poison's Your Mama Don't Dance.

The last thing that made me go "Dayaaaaaam" wasn't a CD but a gig and that was Kill II This in 1998 on the Deviate tour. I'd seen the first line up supporting Megadeth in '97 and they were absolute poo. Went to one of their gigs in 1998 (totally different band to the year before) and within the first 10 seconds of Crucified, I wanted to be on the stage playing in that band playing that music.

So, if I had to limit myself to a top 5 list of landmark albums my first thoughts would be;

Europe - The Final Countdown
Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Oz
Cradle of Filth - Total Fuckin' Darkness (demo tape)
Fear Factory - Demanufacture

In that chronological order:
Metallica - MOP
(this album made me a metal fan, and from there on I started to research bands and buy records on my own).

Opeth - Still Life
(still my fav band to this day, when I heard this I knew it was all I had ever searched for. I ordered all albums from them immediately. They also got me into growls...)

Death - Symbolic
(Chuck Schuldiner definitely has a special place in my heart and is much of an influence on me. I learned half of this record on guitar, shortly before I had my first audition. I still play in that band... :) )

Decapitated - Winds of Creation
(pretty much got me into brutal/technical death metal...)
Dark Suns - Existence
(an experience quite similar to getting Still Life, just to a lesser extent, because at this point I already knew so much great music. But it was the great feeling of again finding something so unique and mindblowing)

The Beatles - Meet The Beatles, The White Album, then all of them.
Once I heard them at age 10 I wanted to play the drums but quickly switched to guitar. The discovery of the love of learning and writing music had me saying bye, bye to sports. I've hated sports ever since.

The Police - Syncronicity
I remember sitting in my room one day listening to this around age 13 or 14 and suddenly thinking, What am I doing? I want to listen to something heavier. Van Halen was probably the heaviest band that I was into at this point. Thus came Zeppelin, AC/DC, Maiden, Priest.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Roger Waters concepts & lyrics just blew me away. Something I've always tried to achieve is his level of lyrical genius. Plus this album and movie (which is my all time favorite movie) I feel shaped me into who I've become which is probably a bad thing.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Used to see metal mags in stores with them on the cover ALL THE TIME and this drove me nuts. Someone on the school bus used to listen to it regularly so I got him to let me check it out. This started me on the whole speed metal/thrash thing which included some progressive metal, hardcore and crossover and early death/black metal stuff.

Obituary - Cause of Death
When I first heard this I thought it was just a Slayer rip off band. Didn't even know James was a part of it. If I had, I would have been more open minded about it since I had already become a fan from Death's Spiritual Healing. Anyway, gave it another chance several months later which opened up the death metal door much wider for me. John Tardy's voice and vocal style is possibly the best imo for that genre. Simply, brutally amazing.

Nirvana - Bleach
I can't really pin point a specific album here but there is something about Bleach. It's just so raw. Not a lot of reverb or chorus, not polished but sounds very good, drum timing is off once in a while, lol. (pre Grohl era)
Just pure stripped down, angry, screaming, distorted rock.
I didn't like them until right before Kurt died, then I couldn't get enough of them. Introduced me to the grunge movement + early punk & post punk. Filled the void well for the lacking metal scene at the time.

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
&
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine
Came back to metal shortly before these releases. They re-introduced me to the thriving metal scene that I've been missing out on for the past 10 years. As did this forum.

I gotta give a mention to Faith No More and Tool also. No real specific reason other than their pure song writing and vocal talents.

Not to mention how a whole album can have so few actual lyrics/words on it. I remember when I first saw the CD Booklet and read those couple of lines of lyrics and thought WTF? Only that many words on a whole album? Maybe this CD booklet is printed incorrectly.:zombie:

I hate to admit it but when I was a kid and dance and indie was all we would see it Tv and radio the first band that made me aware of guitar based music was Bon Jovi when Living on a Prayer came out and Poison by Alice Cooper. I went from there to Maiden and then Metallica.

Im not sure if these albums have influenced me most but when I hear new stuff it doesnt stand a chance if it doesnt give me the feeling I got when I first heard Master of Puppets or Burn my eyes.

I think the life changing moment has to be listening to Donington 1990 on Radio 1 to catch bands like Thunder, Poison and Aerosmith and hearing Tommy Vance play Battery and just thinking holy fuck Ive never heard anything like that ever before!!
