Chango Studios

everyone I've talked to in person laughs and makes fun of chango studios. =/

Hmm, well then their wrong... It's still a HQ studio and they've some damn good artists on their 'to be recorded' schedule, like Memphis May Fire and A Bullet For Pretty Boy.

I agree that the song's on "the tide" are better but the production on "Birth.Eater" is better. And i also agree that there drum tone's sound very similar on all there newer stuff. But hey they are doing something that works for them. And they also put out solid work from what i can tell.

Agreed! Sometimes it bothers me, but in the end I love almost every production they've done!

Shit, really? Why do you think they make fun of them joey? And i'm sure you would hear it the most since both of you guys work with rise.

And about Interlace Studios as well I guess

Can't say I'm a fan of the actual music, but the production on that Tik Tok cover is... it's hard to describe actually. The stereo image seems really weird, and it's really airy. All in a kind of good way. I thought it was just odd at first, but I'm starting to like it.

the drums sound spot on the same...

I've noticed this with a lot of the stuff they've done. If were talking about the same thing?

I think the sleeping with sirens record and the woe is me tracks sound really similar with drums as far as I can tell. Even the jamie's elsewhere record. The drums stick out a little too much for me. Cant really put my finger on what it is.

I thought the same with the airyness! Hard to describe though.

yeah Jamie's Elsewhere and SWS's drums sound similar... well a lot of chango bands have similar snares... but I hope Cameron was just too lazy to put a different snare (sample) on the Woe Is Me demo's as they are (currently) recording their debut full length

I think you can see a lot of improvement recently from that studio. Previous stuff, even as recent as I See Stars, has some pretty weird sounding stuff going on, it doesn't really gel that well, but lately, bands like Broadway and Woe is Me have really had some sweet mixes (imo of course) come out of that studio.

Same here! I often forget that I See Stars recorded there in the early days. I think its cool to see a studio/engineer progress. I'm quite into Woe Is Me right now! Looking forward to hearing the full record. I loved the lead singers voice and then I watched the studio diary... Lets just say hes not the best! But then again, what studio (big or small) isn't using pitch correction plugins these days aye!

Great production, horrible engineering. You'll hear a lot of people back them up because they're attached to the bands they've recorded and aren't noticing the phase problems in these recordings, probably from using Waves Imager or something on the two bus and the unnatural drum tones. Even samples sound more natural.

He learned his production techniques from James Paul Wisner I believe and I definitely hear some "They're Only Chasing Safety" similar delays and reverbs. Not hating but not loving.

Doesnt Adam Antonelli now manage most of the Rise Studios? (minus Joey, pretty sure Craig still manages him)

thought so too, and yes Adam still manages the Foundation, according to the myspace =)

Agree on the final part, but care to fill me in on the phase problems?

from what i hear from several crappy small "local" bands, that studio will tell the bands they will shop their stuff to labels for you if you record there. I don't know if they actually do or not, but it seems like a pretty lame gimmick considering most of the bands they say this to wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting signed.

Oceana's "Birth Eater" sounds like overcompressed smashed shit in my opinion. "The Tide" had an amazing vibe going on and better songs.

I agree 100% Though I think Birth.Eater is a great album, I prefer the songs AND the production on The Tide.

Hmm I've never thought of that, but now that you've pointed that out I have to agree.

When you widen any audio source wider than hard left, hard right in your DAW, plug in, outboard gear, etc, you're creating phase relations that give that airy sound someone mentioned early. Now this could of been done on the overheads (as someone also mentioned) because they do sound pretty far out there or just on the two bus meaning even the guitars would further panned out.

I notice when doing so you lose low end from your original sound source if pushed too far. If you have a lot of things going on and you need extra room in the room which maybe Chango was going after, it's a great tool used right. But multiple instances of this effect give that weird sound that make your head feel funny.

Hah ok, good to know :D

I think that the quality of Jamie's Elsewhere and Broadway is simply great! Very clean production and tone! Likin' it...cool studio IMO.
