Collective questions for Mr. Sneap -thread

you guys are guessing well, Caffreys, Speckled hen, John Smiths, Pedrgee.

When do I get my Rubin on? lol, you mean phone in from the Golf Course? This Megadeth album is full on production, which is nice, beats just mixing and to be honest its more fun.

Quick question. When you mic the cymbals up in pairs with KM184s, how far away from the cymbals do you place the mics? Are there any drum session photos from Resurrection?

It really depends on what I've got to work with. For a quick fix I tend to use a multi band compressor on the DI and then into either the sans amp plug in or amp Farm. I'm liking Waves GTR also at the moment, seems to have a pretty cool low end on a couple of settings. On the Megadeth record, James and I really went to town and we ended up using a 1 x 15 and 8 x 10 ashdown rig with quite an array of pedals, I'll try and get some set up pics off him. We did use 4 tracks in the end. 8", 15", yamama sub kick on an 8" and the DI. I have to say its a pretty killer tone. Another tome people like is Jacks tone from Exodus and thats pretty much the quick fix I mentioned above.

I have this memory of reading in some webzine interview a long time ago (which I cannot find now) that you use small Sony earbuds when fitting the bassguitar in the mix. Is that something that you do often or do you tend to go with NS10 or the Genelecs when sculpting the low end?

Thanks for taking the time for all of this :worship:

I think that was on noise 101. Not sure if that was andy though.

I haven't seen this posted before so I thought I would ask.

Andy, when you sample replace drums do you use a specific sample pack such as Steven Slate Drums, etc., or do you make the samples yourself?

I think this got lost back a few pages, but I would like to know if Andy applies samples to both the bottom and top snare mics, or just one?

Well this might just be me personally, but I'd rather say "I made this good sounding record myself!" than "I made this amazing sounding record using Andy Sneap's presets!" Maybe I'm nuts

You're right Broodwich. Accepting tips and tricks is definitely good, so we can see how someone works. But that idea of constantly asking for presets is pretty redundant. It won't make you better, it's not by having someone saying: "Here, I made this preset it's the best sounding ever because I'm Andy Sneap". Make your OWN and make them sound the best for you

It reads in the first post: No begging for samples.

And this includes presets. The point of this thread is to learn, if you just snap open a preset, you won't learn jackshit like why he made those decisions, why it fits the mix or how to do it yourself if you suddenly can't use the preset for some reason.
