Collective questions for Mr. Sneap -thread

Hey, i read guys, I was just kinda joking, hence the smiley face!!! Good thread though so far. Id just love to spend one day in the studio with the man, I think I could answer 90% of my questions about recording in general in that one day!!!!

In a previous post, someone asked about Andy's Mastering tools / plugins. I as well would love to know what resides on his mixing master buss, and his mastering chain.......

EDIT : DUH, IT's in the main post at the beginning!!!!!!!!

bah, I suck!!!! Sry guys, I keep getting side tracked and lose track of what I read. But what a great thread....

And damnit Andy, I think you should DO THAT PRESET, and ask for some commissions on sales. I'd be willing to bet they could sell a fair amount of copies based on "one of metals top producers" coming up with a preset or two.....

The only downside is you'd have a few thousand myspace bands ALL sounding the EXACT same drum wise :D

That's a huge goddamn downside as far as I'm concerned. And I knew you were half kidding, but let's face it. A lot of us would love to have an Andy Sneap drum preset to just slap on a mix if we're short on time (or ability.) The man's drum sounds rank in the top 10 engineers in the world, no question. But if you really think about it, it wouldn't be a good thing in the long run. We'd end up lazy and stupid and watching too much television  Not to mention I'm sure he spends as much time on his mixes as anyone and it's not really fair to just yank his hard work from him

Perhaps we could take a look at what's been done in the preset and learn? ;)
I honestly feel that what works on one mix never works on another mix. It could give people the wrong idea, that they should always do one thing when in reality there's nothing that you should ALWAYS do in audio. You might feel differently, this is just the conclusion that I've come to

He speaks!:)

Im intrigued by the Crane Song Phoenix plug in. Im a Cubaser though, so I dont have access to it. I'd love to know what it does to your mixes from a pre/post perspective to hear how much "saturation" it adds. I've tried messign around with Vintage Warmer, but never got great results with it, which could definately be due in part to my poor tracking/mixing room.

Simple question, do you put the Tape Saturation Before or AFTER the SSL?

Andy - for the most part people have been asking a lot of specific technical questions, but i'd be interested in hearing some non-tangible stuff like why you think you're so successful at what you do. Obviously you're talented, but any specifics why YOU think so? does it all come down to ears - or a does it involve something much higher, bigger - more intrinsic like seeing the big picture before it ever happens?

Aslong as we're handing out presets, can I get a Loomis preset for my hands so I can shred better?

haha I also just wanted to say that I'm not trying to bash anyone either so I hope it doesn't come off like that. I could see myself asking questions like that especially when I was first starting, but I've since figure out a thing or two. I think...

Well yeah I agree, there's enough bands sounding the same out there as it is.

I think its because I do know what I want to hear, I'm not second guessing. I'm not trying to base my sound on anyone else, or copy anyone else, I'm just trying to get things clear and well played. I guess this is what puts my stamp on things. I'm also a musician and I've been in the business over 20 years, I'd like to think I have a good work ethic, I certainly put the hours in and I think I'm pretty good at dealing with people in general. Where I am didn't come over night and I still feel I have a way to go.

usually after.

Two questions Andy:

1. What piece of gear do you have that is indispensible?

2. What percentage of your tone comes from whats in front of the mic? I like to think that its "all about the source" and the room its in and that you can do nearly anything with a 57. I'm by no means a pro (but hopefully one day, I'll have people waiting on line to record with me) and am just looking for some good advice.

Thanks for your time,

Greg

OK, I thought of another question but I also wanted to say I've been spending way too much time on this forum recently, watching this thread like a hawk :)

What are some of your methods for getting the guitars and the bass guitar to gel together so freaking well until they create one big, monstrous, beast of a fucking tone? :kickass:
