Computer/Technology Thread

Someone posted this on the Neverboards, I want one:

I think the sound card is installed wrong. It says something about one of the drivers. I would screen shot it if I could but...

I work at a store that sells TVs and today we had to explain to an old lady that she did not need to buy a second satellite reciever if she wanted to record something on her dvr and watch something else at the same time.

She also asked how to rewind a DVD.

Well, I connected my hard drive to my mate's PC that is running XP and it found it!! It recognised the drive as soon as XP booted up and then I could browse all my program files. It wouldn't let me access "My documents" because it's protected but the fact that it's not destroyed made me happy.

I explained my problem to my uncle who works with computers, and he said it might be the PSU's fuse that's blown, and that I should be able to connect something directly to the motherboard, but I can't remember exactly what he said, so I'll need to find that out again.

Woo!!! PC starts!!!

I took apart the PSU and unsoldered the fuse from the motherboard, replaced it with a new one and put it all back together again and fucking yes, it works!!

I just need to now get a HDD that I can install a few version of XP onto so I can back up/virus scan mine.

So, I have about a $450 max budget on upgrading.

Currently running:
4gb (2X2gb) DDR3
Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT
AMD Phenom II X4 B40, 3ghz

cant for shit remember what mobo I have, but I just bought it last year, with the cpu. What I would like to get is a gpu, and more ram, and if I have some cash left a widescreen lcd (bigger the better).

Anyone have recommendations on a GPU? My goal is to run Skyrm as flawlessly as possible with my budget :D!

So 4gb more ram will be about $30 at max, not a problem, and I can wait on an new lcd really.

Anyone recommend any GPUs in my price range? Lets aim for $300-$350cnd.

Gaming?

Forget everything with GT or GTS in it, go purely for GTX, those are the high performing cards.

GPU is the main concern for gaming, RAM doesn't really matter all that much (4gb should be fine). Check out the GTX 560Ti or the 570. Just make sure you do not get the reference design (plain with only one fan) and get some quality brand ones. MSI, XFX to name a few makes good ones. This is to lead the heat away more efficiently.

Also check out some ATI 6870's, since Norway's prices is so much more I can only estimate that they will be around your price range.

EDIT: Also yes as Flo said, give us your PSU wattage. Around 600-700w should be enough for most mid-high end cards. Also make sure you have 2x 6pin connectors on the PSU, most GPU's seem to use them these days.
