CONFIRMED: Dio has left us :(

I assumed he would beat this too. It just was never possible that he would lose his battle with cancer.

I never got to see Dio live. My parents wouldn't let me go to the Black and Blue (Black Sabbath & Blue Oyster Cult) show at the Chicago Auditorium because I was too young. IMO, Sabbath was at it's best with RJD.

Not only was he a great singer, and just a good guy, he was also the inventor of the horns! \m/

For as tragic as it must be for any music fan to receive the news that a musician in their scene has passed away, this is the first time that I actually felt it inside of me. Dio never let me down, no matter what band was in at the time or whenever I saw him in concert. I don't think any other heavy metal singer will ever leave the kind of legacy that Dio has left us. For that, I will be eternally grateful.

Stay metal. Never rust (as Ronnie always did).

Ronnie James Dio was so much more than an incredible vocalist, songwriter and musician. He was not only the nicest musician I've ever met but also the nicest person I've ever met. I was lucky enough to have met him many, many times over the years and witnessed firsthand his love for his fans. That's also why this is so hard, I feel as though I've lost a family member.

His music has been the soundtrack to my life. I was in middle school when I first heard the Heaven & Hell album - and owned it on 8-track! Like someone else mentioned earlier, my parents wouldn't let me go to the Black and Blue tour (Black Sabbath & Blue Oyster Cult) either, even though I had a friend with an extra ticket. Once I was on my own I made up for it by seeing him every chance I could from then on.

The first time I saw him was on The Last In Line tour. I snuck backstage after the show and still remember being surprised by how such a huge, larger than life voice and stage presence came from such a tiny guy. At one point we chatted and he was on his tip toes as he rested his arm on my shoulder.

I remember waiting outside by the bus in the freezing cold after the show on the Sacred Heart tour. When Ronnie finally came out and saw me he came right over and gave me a big hug, thanking ME for waiting for him in the cold. When he went to sign my program, my pen had froze and wouldn't write. He immediately sent a roadie to get a sharpie so he could sign it.

One year a friend and I followed Dio's bus back to the hotel. After signing autographs and posing for pictures, Ronnie looked up to the sky and started pointing out stars and constellations. There we were, stargazing with the man who wrote "Stargazer."

He was always such a class act with his fans. I remember one year there was a fan in the audience with every Dio album on vinal and he would hold up each one for each song. Ronnie played to him from the stage announcing "This next song's from the _____ album, do you have that one?" and the guy would hold it up. After the show I saw the guy in line by the bus. He was so nervous (and maybe a little "slow") that he stutters and asks Ronnie to sign his Elf record too, "if you're on that one." People in line started to snicker and make fun of the guy but Ronnie never batted an eyelash. "Of course I'll sign it, see ... here I am" he said as he pointed to his picture on the back of the album.

One show I did miss over the years was the Black Sabbath Dehumanizer tour. My friend (and ride at the time) becided to go to a party instead. Over the years I gave him SO much grief about costing me my one chance to see Dio with Sabbath. Thankfully the Heaven & Hell tour happened and I was lucky enough to see them twice. I remember telling Ronnie all about that (and missing the Black & Blue tour) after the show. He said not to worry about missing those other shows because instead I got to see them at their best.

I could go on and on about all my fond memories of meeting Ronnie after shows. I can't believe I'll never get the chance to see him again. I never did get the chance to interview him for Harder Beat, but I got to photograph him a bunch of times. On my wall I have an autographed photo that's one of my most cherished possessions, a rare photo I took of him smiling onstage.

Ronnie James Dio had one of the greatest voices ever in rock/metal. His work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell and Dio made him a legend. The many musicians he inspired make him an icon. But at heart he was the kindest, most genuine, down to Earth person you could have met.

Goodbye Ronnie. Thank you for the music, the shows and most of all, for being you. Rest In Peace.

It seems only right that I say something being the fan I am. But I find myself sitting here struggling to find the right words as I gaze at the picture of Murray and three angels playing cards inked into my arm.
A moment of silence would not be nearly long enough, nor would a eulogy that would rival an epic poem say enough to honor Ronnie James Dio. Certainly I do not proclaim to be able to find the right words to do so. I don’t believe I could even truly express how I feel right now, for that matter even feel about the man.
I once had the privilege of meeting Dio and I will never forget that evening. Although I did not know him personally one meeting could make one feel like they knew him for a life time. To say Dio was kind, gracious, well spoken, would not begin to describe him. He had a presence that I had never felt before and pretty sure I never will again. And I will forevermore cherish the gift he gave me. As I asked him where he got his power he suavely waved out his hand and his fingers curved upwards has if his crystal ball was about to appear in his hand. He then raised his head looking up straight into my eyes and replied, “Well Jeremy… it comes from the soul”. I do believe what he said to me has helped me through a lot and will continue. I will always be grateful and for everything else he has given. In a world without heroes and full of fallen gods, where dreams more often shatter then come true we need to believe in magic and Dio gave us that.
I will not say that I will miss Dio because he is immortalized and will always be a part of me. When I gaze at the stars I will raise my horns high towards the heavens and then quickly drop them towards hell.
R.I.P. Rainbow King.

A few comments from others at H&H Records;

“May 16th, 2010 will come to be known collectively as one of the saddest days in heavy metal history. There was only one Ronnie James Dio, a brilliant songwriter and performer who championed metal music and made such a very deep impact in the metal genre. Everyone in Witches Mark would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Wendi and the rest of Dio's family, friends and fans worldwide. We will always remember and miss you.”
- Robert Williams, Witches Mark

“The power. The voice. The metal singer that existed before metal. The metal singer that defined "metal singer." It's hard to believe that a man who was so vibrant, so much bigger than life, could fall to life's one true inevitability.

“No one in the entire metal community was loved as much, as devoutly, and as equally across the board as Ronnie James. Only one musical group exists that could even challenge this, and it's one that he managed to jump in and rescue from a downward spiral and put an indestructible stamp on their legacy... all without the help of a hit reality show.”

“What John Lennon was to rock music, Ronnie James was to heavy metal. But while Lennon balanced his time between quirky pop songs and vast political statements, Dio balanced his time between awe-inspiring brilliant heavy music and just simply rockin' like a motherfucker. And that, my friends, is what heavy metal is all about.”

“But don't let this detract from his work with Children of the Night, Hear N' Aid, and all the wonderful things he's done that we don't even know about. It's easy to forget that Ronnie James was just a man, but don't ever forget how down-to-earth and brilliant he was. If you don't believe me, just look up any interview on YouTube. I dare you.”

“As much as I adore all my poster-laden drugged-out rock star idols of the last 60 years... none of them, on or off stage, hold a candle to Ronnie James Dio. “

“Long live rock n' roll...
Long live Ronnie James Dio...”

-Elliot Madre, Praetorius

“ One of the forefathers of metal passes today and reminds us of our own mortality, when the likes of even a Metal God can enter on into the halls of valhalla leaving behind a legacy and definite mark amongst the millions who embraced his music with open eager hearts and horns held high.”
- Jacob Edwards, Natu /Sabverata

“Today metal has lost its most beloved ambassador. Dio means "god" in Italian and for many of us Ronnie was immortal. My first reaction to the news of his passing was sheer disbelief...it didn't seem possible for Dio to die. It will take time to fully realize the impact his death will have on the metal community, but I think it's safe to say that if heavy metal has ever been a part of your life, then in some way, so has Ronnie James Dio. Rest in peace brother.”
- Josh Hart staff

“Ronnie was a true musician, artist, performer, and metal visionary. His musical contributions literally defined what heavy metal is. Ronnie may be gone, but his memory will surely live on.
Epic man, rock on-“

- Sam DeFilipp, Praetorius

"It would be difficult for anyone in the modern progressive musical landscape to not lend a nod to Ronnie James Dio. Whether it was with Black Sabbath or his solo pursuits, he tread ground that many of us now thoughtlessly follow. And now, another one is gone and will be missed. It is strange when we reflect on it - that we never seem to conceive of any of our musical heroes dying. And the world seems to reverberate with a chilling silence when we realize that a certain voice or a certain sound will never be created again - that there is no more of the story to be told. Many icons large and small have passed in the last few years and I think that many fans of music feel that sense of void. Yet, inspiration from these pioneers lingers on in the hearts of those who felt a kindred spirit in that music which has spanned generations. Whatever your feelings on the man or his music one cannot deny the respect that he indisputably earned by paving the way for so many of us musicians. I wish his family comfort in knowing that he will be remembered for generations. After all, immortality is only achieved in the memories of others. Here's to Dio."

- Chris Hathcock, The Reticent

“Yesterday we lost an icon and one of the godfather's of heavy metal. His music has been a huge inspiration to me for a long time. The metal horns Dio made popular amongst metal maniacs will be eternally raised forever! Long Live Rock and Roll, Long Live Ronnie James Dio! Rest In Peace!”

- Shannon Frye-Seventh Calling

“Ronnie James Dio was and still is, one of the biggest vocal influences in the history of Heavy Metal. I know that many others will agree. A true showman through and through. Mr. Dio, you have always been a Hero among Heroes. You will be missed greatly in our world. R.I.P”

- Steve Handel-Seventh Calling

“What a tragic turn of events, and great loss of talent in ingenuity, the Heavy Metal world just lost one if it's forefathers and greatest influences. Horns up to you Ronnie - to all of us fortunate enough to witness your success, you will always be the true voice of metal.”

- Alex Ritchey-Seventh Calling

“Ronnie Dio has always been one of the best singers/writers, and has quite a legacy to behold. You have given us many yrs. of great music Mr. Dio. You will be missed. R.I.P.”

- Marc Flores-Seventh Calling

Quite overwhelmed yesterday upon hearing the news, can only imagine what Wendy is going through now. What an incredible gentleman. Since the first Elf and Rainbow albums, and seeing the band live in the 70s, I've enjoyed everything he's been involved with. Rest in peace Ronnie, and thank you for enlightening us with your incredible talent and kind and gentle spirit.

I personally have only been listening to DIO since his passing. What great music he has put out.

Tuesday, Dio's family announced that a public memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on May 30 in the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.

I wish I had the money to fly from Alabama to go to this.

Oliva's statement:

" Two days has passed and I still cannot come to grips with the
tragic passing of Ronnie James Dio. My heart is sad once again.
I have always considered Ronnie as a God, a hero, a pioneer,
a legend, and one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Ronnie gave Savatage their first break when he took us on
tour so many years ago. We were so young and did so many
stupid things on that tour. But Ronnie let it all go, and took care
of us. The world has lost more than an icon...we lost so much
more than that this past Sunday. I can't properly express my
sadness. Thank you Ronnie and for all you have given us as
a musician, but most of all for your sweet and caring soul.
You will be missed, and we will celebrate your life forever."

Jon Oliva

Like many, I never met Ronnie James Dio, but I always felt that I'd like the guy. Friendly attitude, but he took no crap - how I strive to be. My first exposure to Dio's voice was actually the Hear 'n Aid album, and I went from that to "Holy Diver." I can't really add much more that hasn't already been said by others, but of all the metal performers I discovered in my teenage years, Dio has made the longest lasting impression. His melodic genius and evocative lyrics will be with me until I die, and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

"I said when I've gone away lord you know it's right to leave here
So I just became invisible I went away, disappear before your eyes."

The only way to really stay is to walk right out the door.

Wow... just wow. From the Westboro Baptist Church website:

http://www.godhatesfags.com/schedule.html

"Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills 6300 Forest Lawn Drive WBC to picket this public memorial to remind you who worship that old Serpent, Satan, that your time is very short. You know 67 year old, Satan-worshiping (or at least one of their enablers) Ronnie James Dio (of showing his devil horns to the world each time he goes in public) Black Sabbath fame is dead, right? We'll be there! Just because the chances of any of God's elect being amongst this group of heavy metal sycophants is slim to none does not mean they should not get some good words. Yes, it is true that Ozzy Osbourne did "accidentally" bite off the head of a bat, but THAT is the least of their sins (little nasties!), they currently do not do that, but they throw raw meat to the audience and encourage violence of EVERY FORM! Here you have the list of admitted sins of this now dead and in hell pervert: 1) He hates his neighbor(s) starting with Ozzy Osbourne, and continuing down to his pornography star niece Gen Padova! 2) He hates God. Pay especial attention to the fact that he changed his original sir name from Padova to Dio, which means God in Italian. 3)Ronnie the simpleton enabled, and encouraged Sorceries: everything he was about including the little finger horn thing (he got this from his mother which is an incantation to ward off the "evil eye") to the drugs, bloody raw meat and his fellowship with those pentagon necklace wearing freakish band members. Yes, Ronnie James Padova (NOT DIO) is currently residing in hell. When all those who worship him and his false gods meet him in hell it will be just like this: Isaiah 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: Isaiah 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. Praise God all ye, His people. The Great Day of the Lord draws nigh. AMEN!"

This is on their page of upcoming events, where evidently they have announced that they are going to picket Dio's memorial service. I wish I could afford to go out there for this, because I would happily go to jail to be able to kick Fred Phelps and his cunt daughters' teeth in, if they were to show up and protest/picket this.

I just came here to post about that. It is indeed up on the Westboro page.

How about a BEATDOWN of Biblical proportions? Time to send some of these fucks to the hospital......

Unbelievable. Just when I thought some of these religious conservative views couldn't get any worse...this. I cracked up reading this. It's quite frightening the ideology some people have, especially those who most likely have never heard the man even speak or sing. What sickens me the most though is the guy is dead for crying out loud. Let people mourn their loss.
