'Convince me this band is good' challenge

I just appreciate any material that transcends the basic codes of death metal because that's the essence of death metal isn't it, being anti-music and pushing the boundaries of music.

That's not the "essence" of death metal, to make anti-music? It's not Nurse With Wound mate.

There isn't that much Immolation in them, there's a vague resemblance at best imo.

lmao okay then.

Just like me. I dont understand that band at all. On the other hand, Altarage is like a more enjoyable iteration of Portal, which I listen to from time to time.

Don't think I've ever heard of Altarage.

OK so I've listened to None So Vile a bunch of times over the course of the week.

Instead of listing technical/musical reasons as to why I can't totally get into them I'm going to try the deeper reason: they're too "common" for me. Not generic, I mean common as in "common folk". I think there's sth about that Quebecois boorish porngrind-ish "let's just play the fk out of our instruments and set your ears on fire and shit diarrhea all over your brain" type of vulgarity that keeps me from enjoying them completely. Their music is brutal but superficial. For e.g. a band like Godflesh is 1M times less complex, but a lot deeper and darker. A band like Napalm Death is also thick and "common" af, but their music is substantial and more steadily written. Gorguts songs are also super complex and contain tons of notes, but they're also profoundly obscure in a meaningful way.

So with Cryptopsy I enjoyed the farty mosh parts, I love the tremolo picked riffs they sound juicy as hell... but sth about the focus being on grindcorish virtuosity, and being too tongue-in-cheek, the vocals being ridiculous on purpose... that's how I perceive it.

Very odd statement. But if that's the case, it should be noted that the band continued to get even more "non-linear" with their song structures as they went on. Try listening to the two albums with Mike DiSalvo on vox if None So Vile doesn't do much for you.

So, to make this go on, try to convince me that King Diamond is a legendary metal outfit. I mean, I enjoy some of his tunes, but they arent that impeccable as people try to work it out. Im waiting.

Name any other band of the 80s with as high a level of musical showmanship without explicitly wearing prog on their sleeves. Alternatively, just listen to the closing guitar solo of Black Horsemen and stop living if you don't think it's transcendent.

Oh, barking up the wrong tree there man. In fact, yeah count me in, someone convince EspaDa and me King Diamond isn't wildly overrated and genuinely worth a listen.

You might just read interviews from key figures of the metal scene (especially in black metal) about KD. He was a huge influence and it's recognized by a myriad of well known musicians as one of the greatest ever. He even sang on Absu's Tara.

There's one interview from Necroabyssious (Varathron's vocalist) I remember where he explains that the early Hellenic metal scene was mostly influenced by heavy metal and they mostly created their black metal sound from there, being Mercyful Fate and KD one of the greatest influences in all bands that came out from Greece back then.

I also find most of his work to be incredibly overrated. I would rather listen to Mercyful Fate any day

Nah but King D is a legend. All his output through 98 is damn good. Conspiracy is just as good as the best death metal albums from 89.

He also said Conspiracy is the only King Diamond album he likes. Kinda bizarre.

He's obviously talking about King Diamond the band you mouth-breather. Would you find it bizarre if someone said "Holy Diver is the only Dio album I like. First three Rainbow albums will always be his best material though."?
