'Convince me this band is good' challenge

Yes, I love the first two MF albums. As far as the separate KD material, I can't get into it. It's not bad but something is missing with those in my opinion

Never thought I'd have to convince someone to like Dissection. But then again OP's avatar speaks volumes. First two albums are definitely the best. First one if you like a rawer sound, second for more polished. Never could enjoy the last one.

Well look on the bright side. At least you could enjoy the first ones.

Yeah so I return to the Light's Bane every so often and give it a shot. It's well written stuff, well executed, there's a certain beauty to the music...but it's an album that sounds unremarkable to me. Plenty of those Swedish bands were not just epic and melodic, but actually catchy. This, I'll gladly lsn to if someone's playing it in the car or wtvr, sure why not, but it's not sth I'll seek myself because I've got more defined/memorable melodeath to lsn to if I wish. This sounds like a blob of epic melodic Scandinavian death metal. It's pretty nice, but not worth too much energy. It's one of those albums that with a bit of distance sounds like a blast-beat assault with fast-strummed power chords and a constant regurgitation of same-sounding tremolo-picked riffs, the occasional lead in the foreground... it's too hyperactive for its own good and really could've used more quality over quantity. A steadier, more selective/mature version of this would've been more interesting.

Give me a reason (you have my word I'll keep an open mind) to listen to Monstrosity when I can listen to Cannibal Corpse. Not interested in ad hominems, interested in a reason.

Name any other band of the 80s with as high a level of musical showmanship without explicitly wearing prog on their sleeves. Alternatively, just listen to the closing guitar solo of Black Horsemen and stop living if you don't think it's transcendent.

I loved the solo and the song's structure, but I guess it's his highs that keep putting me off. Maybe I'll get used to it with time. And yeah, the solo's fucking great and chilling.

Cannibal Corpse dont have riffs like this. When I first heard this track, I knew it was going to stay with me for looong years. It fucking rocks.

I was only joking with my snarky statement. I couldn't get into MA's later stuff, but I'm not one to judge.

So... I'm not really one of those dudes who's very eloquent when discussing music so I'll do my best. But personally, I just don't care for CC. The ultra guttural vocals and fuzzy guitar riffs have never been my thing. So Monstrosity wins on that front. I hear more influence of Death, Autopsy, Obituary etc. More riff based and thrashy. Just how I prefer my death metal

As for Dissection, it sounds maybe like you're comparing it too much to melodeath. Melodeath is a bit more mainstream and polished and palatable in general. Dissection certainly has a more mainstream and melodic vibe but I would say still has strong roots in black metal and is therefor going to have a little less of a polished vibe. Other than them I haven't been overly enchanted with Swedish melodic metal. It often seems overly formulaic and has less of that raw beauty I love about dissection

Someone convince me that Cloven Hoof and Savage Grace are any good.

Not by any means a huge Cloven Hoof fan, but they definitely put on a good show. At least the two songs I stayed for lol

Why in the world do you keep comparing them? Is it because of the Corpsegrinder link? WHY LISTEN TO *insert death metal band* WHEN I CAN LISTEN TO *insert another death metal and hurdurdur

I get it, you're an attention hungry whore who sucks at trolling. But you really have to be more creative and try harder.

Because both bands are fucking different.

It's like comparing Obituary with Disincarnate, just because they shared a band member but both bands sound nothing alike.

i know None So Vile is the go to album to recc when discussion Cryptopsy but i honestly cant help but highly reccomend their debut, you might find something in it that you cant find with None So Vile idk

i mean you can listen to more than one band my man it might get boring blasting Cannibal Corpse 24/7 theres other shit out there to explore

I used to prefer the debut myself. I actually didn't even like None So Vile for the longest time but since I've come around to it, I like it better than the debut.

Let’s be real, The Unspoken King is obviously Cryptopsy’s peak.

In all seriousness though I find None So Vile to be really catchy for something so violent. “Phobophile” is catchy as fuck and there are numerous moments throughout the other tracks. I can’t get enough of that ending of “Benedictine Convulsions”.

lsned to it a couple of times two separate days, yeah that's pretty cool thx for the link.
They've always had that tendency to sound more progressive, although they might not be actually as technical as Cannibal Corpse.

I realize they're different, it's just that if you've got two foods that are essentially similar enough, and one is distinctly better in quality, you won't ever mix it up betw. the two, you'll just eat the better one all the time. With Corpse I get a song-writing quality that is far superior to most similar bands. The composers (Webster, O'Brien...) all have a brilliant sense of the fretboard and how to write meaningful death metal riffs, and they're prolific as hell. Like if CC didn't exist, there'd be a whole area of potential in riffing that would've been left unexplored. Not so much with other bands. There's such a wealth of riffs in the Cannibal discography, all distinct. Very difficult to find a band with as abundant a top shelf riff library. Some bands can do it for a couple of albums, 3 maybe, but then they're out. Corpse have been relevant since the 90's.

Monstrosity l could never get into, it was kind of a pale imitation to the heavier stuff l listened to at the time. But l hear it now and ...realize
