Dark fucking Throne!

They were definitively a great death metal band, after they became a great black metal band...

and IMO, they're pretty good in their new style (crust???)

Darkthrone are one of those very consistently good bands despite changing their sound so many times throughout their career.

Soulside Journey is my person favorite closely followed by Under A Funeral Moon.

How do you suppose I do that considering I am listening to them now and still find them boring?

Darkthrone was one of those bands that took me a while to get into. About 6 years ago I listened to Transylvanian Hunger and Soulside Journey and neither did much for me but a couple years later I listened to them again and I was completely blown away. TH is pretty much perfect black metal, and SJ comes pretty close to being perfect death metal imo. I don't really care for their later stuff; I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know how much you're into black metal at this point but the more you get into it the more you'll learn to love Darkthrone, especially the stuff from their classic period. I guarantee it.

It took me about 5 listens of "Transylvanian Hunger" to grasp its brilliance. Really, that was the album that made me come to terms with black metal and opened my eyes to what it is all about. Until then, I really didn't know what I was listening for in BM, but "Transylvanian Hunger" almost single handedly changed that.

The first one I heard was Panzerfaust, and I instantly liked it. I had not been into black metal much at that point. I actually find ABITNS the most difficult to get into. It doesn't grab me as much as TH or UAFM. TH was instant with me as well. I don't know why people can't get into this album. I think the previous ones are definitely more difficult.

How does Under A Funeral Moon compare to Transylvanian Hunger? I own the latter, with the former on my to-buy list. I've been considering making it a higher priority though.

I'm still a noob in terms of black metal. I really dig Emperor and the Leviathan split I have, as well as some Summoning tunes and Bathory, but my knowledge of black metal is very limited. I do enjoy it and I think I'm like Addo where I don't really know what I'm listening for in black metal.

It tends to happen to me that I won't listen to an album for about a year and I will come back and listen to it and think it is amazing. That happened with Corrosion of Conformity and now they are one of my favorites.

As far as Darkthrone goes, I only have ABITNS, FOAD and Soulside Journey. I should probably check out TH and UAFM before I really write off Darkthrone.
