I tried to listen to this... in one occassion, I fell asleep to it, no kidding any of you. If anything, it helped me appreciate true Thrash metal better. So, it's "Thrash Magnetic" to me (as in it's so slow and bland that I want to quickly go listen to any good Thrash band ASAP.)
Metallica is a pop band, and as such, they have to appeal to the masses. It's the price they chose to pay, and well, they are living comfortably. That's their choice, it's actually OK. Couldn't care less. But I don't care either for their music anymore, including DM. One of the posters above mentioned many good Thrash bands still Thrashing around, and to them I add the more recent ones, like in the last ten years of so. After listening to those bands, why would I feel compelled to give Metallica my money? I feel no urge to do so; I saw a couple of Kill em all 45 rpms that I would have bought at a lower price, and it was thirty something bucks! I said to myself, *uck this, they don't deserve it!!! I would rather spend that same money on good bands. I have to work hard for my own money, and Metallica doesn't. They could give away their product at this point. Yet this thing is selling a lot, mostly (IMHO) because people are usually easy to fall for marketing ploys.
Having said this, music is a personal taste, and I didn't mean to imply that any of you are wrong for liking DM. It's only my opinion. I just feel it's insulting to the great bands that lesser bands earn lots of money with lazy, non-inspiring efforts (in my view). It's a crime, in a way. I feel like supporting Metallica is like giving free money to Bill Gates or something, and receiving nothing in return. Whereas some other REALLY great bands (greatness is very often NOT the same as popular) often struggle just to tour around and self-produce an album. Yes, it's life, but it doesn't mean I have to agree, and I will do my part by not supporting Metallica and the money machine. Of course, it's your money, and spend it on something you will enjoy! If it's DM, so be it.
I just really cannot do the same, and support these guys. On purely selfish grounds, there is just much better things to spend your money on. I am not an elitist Thrasher or anything, I listen to Classical a lot, and respect each people's opinions. I won't kill Emo kids; they have the right to listen and play their... I know, it's bad, but they are entitled to hear and play whatever, for better or worse. Live and let live; listen, and let listen. I have chosen Thrash, though, and don't care about what you think of me because of it.
On a side-note, Anthrax used to be great, and were an original Thrash band with Joey (hey, I hate all the JoeyvsBushvsDan topics, so don't think I am starting one now), but somehow felt Joey no longer suited their style... they wanted to be less original! (As Joey provided an unique element to their sound, and was really different to most other Thrash band singers.) I was listening to their most hated Joey era recording, SoE, and it was really good, despite the really poor mastering. I like more Anthrax than Metallica, but like with Metallica, I am not expecting much from their next recording, not because of Dan, but just seeing the direction they have right now with their music. Heh, even if it was a reunion lineup recording, I doubt it would have been the same as before. They like Thrash, but I question whether they can produce real new Thrash at this point (or whether they have the inclination to do so, for many reasons.) It's a pity, Anthrax was so unique a Thrash band back then! Sometimes progression is regression in disguise, as I have posted before.
Go listen to new bands! There are many young and less young bands there that as of now, are surpassing our old musical heroes (I used to love Metallica when I was young, cannot love them anymore.) Their CD's are usually cheaper, but their music is often not any worse than the best of what was done back in the eighties (generally speaking.) Support your underground Thrash!!!
(Underground doesn't equate quality. But it's harder to find quality on pop-bands, let's not delude ourselves- again, it's my opinion, but I strongly believe this.)
Peace to all; for those who like DM, enjoy! For those who don't, I know where you are coming from. Faster is Gooder!!!
