Hey guys... looking like i can pick up the two for pretty much the same price, give or take 50 quid. So i really do not know what to do!!! I hear from a lot of people that the mark II has more of a high end and is not so great? Thing is, 5150 II is more likely to hold value si?

Twood be great if ya could help me decide at this moment in time, as there is no way im realistically going to be able to compare them in a shop :(

if you want a better clean sound then go for the mk II. is this for live or recording?

Its for both dude all round :)

Trouble is, i've heard from this forum the two ends of the scale:

"5150 mk1 is a little warmer than the 5150II. The 5150II is generally a more sterile sounding amp. More like solid state. However, it's got a better clean channel, and 3 channels total." from the dubbleo

"Sonically I don't think the differences between the two (and I've tried both) are significant enough to even talk about" from the kazrog

Craziest thing is, the purchase is being based around this forum :p Totally silly, but i know the sound is gonna kill and you guys are knowledgable bas*ards :p

I've always found the original to work better - but isn't the newer 6505 a replica of the original?

Just seen you played hobbits recently - mark (the owner) is the man! - I love playing that venue that place is wicked - did you try any of his spunk? evil shit! (a drink from germany and not actually his man goo)

Yep new is of course a replica exact circuits and all apprently. I dont care about new tho- the choice is of 5150 and 5150II at very similar prices :erk:
Man! Hobbits is a great place :kickass: His spunk? I didnt know about it! Whats it like? I think we were invited back mid July or something so i hear :danceboy:

it's a very interesting question though....some day i'll have to buy a 5150 II just for shits and giggles to do some real life first hand a/b shootout.
the second EQ for the green channel is the ONLY thing i wish my 5150 I had, otherwise it's perfect. i'm using the green for rhyhtm and red for leads anyways, but i want to use a different EQ for leads as well as just more gain and volume, all with the push of one button.
the reason why i'm hesitating is that the 5150II *apparently* sounds worse and is less reliable. i don't wanna change one damn thing about my 5150's sound.

grrr, the decision is pain staking haha. I dont want any regrets lol. The battle seems to be extra EQ vs a slightly worse sound... and 5150 I is slightly cheaper. Thing is, im gonna be using gt6 for cleans so im not sure at this moment in time i think i'll be bypassing the pre i guess so wont need the EQ anyway. Its just in the future if i dump the gt6 for any reason i could be slightly gutted... Time to toss a coin haha :dopey:

well.....I heard the 5150 II v.s. a 5150 I signature in guitar center side by side.
And the 5150 II sounded close the same as I, but the mkII also seemed cleaner on green, and has 3 channels, two eq's, and the gain seemed more forgiving to me.
I think it hides my sloppy guitar skills better LOL!!!!!

I think the 2 sound really similar. I think you'd find more drastic tonal differences with stock tube differences than actual design differences. I've owned a 5150 and a 6505+, so I've owned both. For the most part, at gig volume, they sounded really close. bedroom playing seems to be achieved much much easier with the 6505+(5150II) for some reason. Getting to the sweet spot on my old 5150 meant I was pretty much at gig levels, while I can get there at a lower volume with the 6505+ and it extends to gig volumes and above.

yeah.....what this guy said!:headbang:

I have owned 2 5150's and 1 5150 combo........I never actually owned a mkII, only played on at the stores.

But I just bought a Voodoo modded 6505+ (mkII) so, hopefully it will be as sweet as any 5150 I've owned if not better. Live or Recorded.:loco:

Ok! Excellent information thanks guys. One final question- Has anybody actually had any reliability issues with these amps? Im hoping its pretty much a warhorse and the only things that could go wrong if it were dropped out of a plane (ok slight exageration :p ) would be the tubes? I am very much leaning towards 5150 II at the moment :heh:

I've seen a 5150 go sideways off of a 4x12..... The guy picked it back up and kept on playing.... Pretty stout if ya ask me....

Ha, yeah, I'd say that Peaveys for the most part are a reliable workhorse, as that seemes to be Hartley Peavey's MO for the last 40 years. The company seems to have held up it's word. WHile they haven't always had gems in terms of tone, they have always been rock solid.

My experiences with Peavey have been nothing but great. Getting replacement parts from them is as easy as calling the factory and ordering them - for a very low price, and dealt in a friendly manner. And, the artist relations dept. has always been prompt and courteous when I've dealt with them.

here is some info from fja mods (a place here that does a lot of 5150 mods) about the differences in the two:

The 5150II has the following differences:

rhythm channel crunch is foot switchable

adjustable bias (cold range)

separate EQ for each channel

separate presence and resonance for each channel

brighter overall tone

better clean tone

a little less gain

Nope they're built like a tank you won't have any big problems!
The only problem my tech told me is that peavey uses bad "cap resistor" (I'm not a tech so I've taken that for granted) so you can have a noise going on and off sometimes. But only if you have a bad cap, mine had and it was brand new.
Anyway I never heard a problem like mine anywhere but he assured me that's true sometimes it happens.
So don't worry about any problem!
Buy it and destroy the world
My advice is to fire up the amp at home at midnight, say post gain at 6 or 7 and then play a massive ammount of powerchord.
Your neighbourhood will love ya.
