I like the clean vox on zero point, what mic/fx e.t.c did you use for it ?

Here's the signal chain:
Audio Technica AT4060 Condenser Mic
DBX 386 Tube Preamp (the weakest link in my setup)
URei LA-4A Compressor
MOTU 828 Mk II FireWire interface to G5 + Digital Performer
Waves DeEsser
Waves Renaissance Compressor
UAD-1 Neve 1073 EQ
AltiVerb using a Plate reverb impulse

Cool shit, wish i could afford some of that gear, especially the AT4060.

Yeah at $1000 USD street price it's not "cheap" in the greater sense, but still quite a deal considering that it makes a great mic for just about anything (particularly vocals and acoustic instruments) and can handle high SPLs. I've even miked cabinets with it! Also makes a great room mic for drums when set up in a pair with another 4060.

I may be blind, but I could have sworn that you've posted that impulse before...I went through pages and pages of threads. Is there a damn search feature in this forum?!?!

Could you possibly post that impulse file?

holy hell kazrog, i was searching the forum trying to learn about impulses and stumbled across your tune. that's some of the best sounding guitar i've ever heard. your production is very tight too.

is it just you in BackMask? anyhow, i'm going to keep an eye on the website.

Thanks! BACKMASK is my project in the sense that I started the band with a self-produced demo a few years ago and that I still write and perform 90% or more of the music and lyrics. Right now BACKMASK is me and a bassist. We've had our share of member changes, most recently a guitarist and drummer left the band. It's been very difficult finding the right musicians, but ultimately I've kept the project going in spite of some challenges and occasional self-doubt.

Occasionally I've wondered if I should just stop trying to find band members and finish a complete new album on my own that's representative of where I'm at musically now. Playing shows, lineup changes, etc. have distracted me from that goal sufficiently enough to where the only full-length album I've ever done was in 2000, and it was pretty horrible production-wise because I had no idea what I was doing.

It's been a learning experience, for sure, and I really appreciate all the feedback you guys have been giving me here since late 2004 when I started posting.

Sounds killer Shane!Maybe the vocals could be a tad higher?

Thanks! You're probably right about the vocals, it's a difficult thing to get just right. This mix is "final" for now until we go to mix the whole album, but I'm sure we'll make some mix tweaks at that point. Right now we're focusing on getting a few new songs up on the website to promote with.

cool, your recordings on it sound great and i just saw two blind comparisons with the motu against the rme FF800 and a apogee, and both times most people chose the motu!
so i'm getting myself the damn motu!

shane, that really is a very nice production. the guitars are choice.

two things stuck out

the snare hints about being triggered during the multi-hit fills

the vocals could possibly stand to ride on top a bit more.

Great job...

Thanks! I agree with your suggestions - bear in mind, the entire kit is Battery, no real drums whatsoever. I kind of like the super-triggered vibe of the snare though, maybe I have bad taste.
