Dimebag R.I.P. :-(

I have to say I agree with pretty much everything Justin S, Moonlapse and a few more have said. I was totaly shocked by wednesday's tragedy, but what bothered me was more the idea that it has actually been possible for a crazy guy to open fire in a club and killing innocent people that the fact that Dimebag got killed. Sure he was a hell of a guitar player. I still don't see why he is glorified that much, I'm sure if asked last week most (I said most) of you wouldn't have said Dimebag was the musician that influenced you the most. It's not that no one should grieve for his death, but it looks like the way a musician dies contributes a lot to establish his legacy, and I don't think it is a good thing that our society reacts this way.

To the people insulting Justin S or other board members I say that you should learn to respect other people's opinion.

My prayers will go to Vinnie Paul who saw his brother and long time bandmate killed before his eyes, I hope he'll be strong enough to get over it and enjoy the remaining years of his life.

This guy inspired me to pick up a guitar... he was no saint but did he ever hurt anyone? My condolences to his family and to the families of the other victims.

P.S. - Fuck you Justin S. I understand you might not like Dimebag but you don't like strip tease? You're a fucking pussy... go hug your boyfriend.

I DO care about what happened. What id like to see (and what started to happen) is more of a focus on what impact this will have on music and touring in general, along side the immediate sadness.
I have no problem with people feeling loss over Dimebag; its his glorification that bothers me.

if it bothers you that people are glorifying one of the best metal guitarists ever.. then stop POSTING IN THE THREAD THAT WAS MADE TO HONOUR AND REMEMBER HIM..

He deserves to be glorified for all the work that he has done in the metal community, and the inspiration that he has given to thousands of people. From other peoples testimonials, he was a great guy. Now I dont know what the motive was for his murder, but none the less that is a fucked up way to go.

I'm gonna pop open a beer right now and drink it for the man himself.

RIP Dimebag..... :(

This is what I have to say about this horrific incident. Although I've grown out of Pantera, I HAVE ENJOYED thier music..Ive seen Pantera quite a few times and I've always had a BLAST. Pantera did bring some of the more underground bands on tour with them namely MORBID ANGEL as Phil (Anselmo) listens to alot of underground death and black metal. So there is no need for metal elitists to be sarcastic in this time of mourning and grieving as most of us in the metal community are in shock.
Whatever you THINK of Pantera/Damageplan music is almost irrelevant. What happened in Columbus, Ohio was one of the most horrific tragedies in music history.
The underground metal scene thrives off the loyalty and intimacy of it's fanbase. Members of Damageplan have played in arenas with Pantera and seeing DamagePlan in an intimate club would normally be a treat.
Unfortuanatly there are obsessive wingnuts out there from all walks of life whom are into all genres of music.
This man, and will NOT dignify his existance by calling him a metal or PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN fan, was WAY to obsessive with PANTERA and delusional. Dimebag's killer was a wingnut.
I think, specificaly here in America, people are obsessed with the ideal of being famous, getting rich, and people in leadership positions. In comes with the territory in a Capatilist nation whom preaches that if you pull your self up by your bootstraps, you too can make it BIG.
Most people end up in dead end jobs. A freind told me, sports fans can be sooo obsessive, when the home team wins, the whole region feels exstatic, when the home team loses people go home and beat thier wives.
It's within those obsession's that people become delsuional and forget the word BOUNDARIES.
I figure people that obsessed with the cult of musicians, celeberity
and people of leadership (or pontential) have no sense of thier OWN identity.
it's really when people start living vocariously through musicians, celebraties, athletes, entertainers, to simply make up for thier own lack of identity, substance or flat out talent or personality that people become, well sort of dangerous within a realm of jealosy.
The cop that capped DIMEBAG's murderer should be commended for a job well done considering the hostage situation, and Dimebag's murderer could have pontentionally killed more people.
Metal horns to the cop in Columbus, Ohio \m/..
I would also like to say that I've always enjoyed Dimebag's staccato thrash style of playing, DIMEBAG wasn't the originator of this style of playing, but it was nice to hear a major label band play that almost staccato style of thrash. PANTERA were a tight band, there pits back in the early 90's were NUTS.
I would just like to send out my most heartfelt condolesences to all freinds, and family of the deceased.
Anybody who worked at the nightclub in Columbus, Ohio 2 days ago, and of course DIMEBAG (Darryl Abbot-Pantera/Damageplan) RIP bro-You have inspired all of us, and you will be missed.
STAY Metal all \m/ -l-

I'm sorry for bugging Justin, Moonlapse and anyone pissed off at people glorifying Dime...but it's not like Dime said he was the best at what he did. People who loved his music and playing glorified him. But anyway...we're all gonna have to move on. Damage Plan I guess had alot of potential of being a better band, it blows that we wouldn't be able to see that I guess. Dimebag was my fav. guitarist growing up and to know that he isn't alive anymore crushes me...but I'm gonna have to move on. Prolly my last post in this thread. RIP Dime

Your sorry for bugging them? Your sorry that you expressed what you felt? wtf man, I dont know how else to say it, but you need to grow some balls between your legs. Yes, all of us will have to move on, ofcourse it will be very hard for big fans of Dime, the band, members of pantera and ofcourse Vinnie to move on. Just plz man, if you say something that you really feel and believe in, dont go back on it and then appologize on some 'internet' forum because some people disagreed with you and had a different point of view. :yuk:

Hes not apologizing for his views. I think he understands he went a little overboard in saying i needed to shave my 'pussy'! :tickled:

Dimebag Darrel... I still can't believe he's gone. He's one of my favorite guitarists, and is in one of my favorite bands. He was one of the greats that inspired me to pick up a guitar... so here's 12pack to ya.

R.I.P. man.

i support what justin s is saying

as this is a music forum, we should acknowledge and respect dimebag's (significant) contribution to the musical world; demanding that anyone revere him as anything more is irrational. let everyone draw their own conclusions regarding his character, personality, and "legendary" status, but even those who dislike pantera should be able to appreciate his impact on the metal community over his career.

Personally I´m not a big fan of Pantera but I´m very sorry to hear about this tragic event my heart goes out to Dimebag Darrell´s family, as well as the other families who´s been affected by this.

RIP Dimebag Darrel

Ps. To Justin S, Moonlapse and others why are you so upset about the fact that Darrel is being glorified. A lot of ppl really loved him for his musical skills and perhaps also his personallity (if they´ve met him), of course they will glorify him.

it's just too fuckin' bad dude...all I have to say(there goes my promise for a last post). Because I KNOW if anyone from Opeth innocently died at a show here from a gunshot, Justin and Moonlapse would NOT be saying all this...if it were anyone they admired, they'd be shutting their holes.

You still misunderstand me. If any members of Opeth got killed tomorrow, of course id be more sympathetic; i am after all posting on a board dedicated to the band (and in addition i think they are much more decent guys). However, if people were coming on here and posting about how godlike they were and blowing it out of proportion, then you bet id be in here urging the same restraint as i am now. Its not about some personal grudge against Dime, or meanspirited hypocrisy. I strive to be, if anything, consistant in my logic. Glorification of entertainers is thinly masked idolatry whether its Elvis, Cobain, Dimebag, or Akerfeldt.

I also am not claiming that everyone in this thread is overdoing it. Many are just remembering the music and shows theve seen, and thats great- I fully understand that he influenced many people. Its the "he was such a great guy, hes a genius, he will be remembered for ever, i cried all day" type posts that i think are inflammatory. If you truly want to pay respect, remember him for what he was; gifts as well as flaws. Some moderation and perspective is all im asking for.

Also, its not that I am terribly upset about people inflating worth, especially of celebrities. It happens every day in a myriad of ways and im quite used to it. I just thought that while im on this board i thought id express my opinion, just like everyone else; it just so happens that it quickly became more personal and i felt the need to at least explain or defend my thinking, and why i was critical of Dimebag.

That said, i do think that my first posts may have seemed a little harsh. Looking back, maybe i should have framed them a little less controversially; the last thing i want to do is come across as cold hearted. Bottom line, a tragedy, but for many other reasons than simply the death of Dimebag.

Opeth need to get a Moderator for their board, I erase these trolls accounts immediatly from our board.

When I heard that “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was murdered while on stage, all I could think about at the time was then I met him when I was 15 at Zia Records by my house in Phoenix, AZ. I waited some hours to get my poster autographed by all of Pantera, most importantly my favorite metal guitarist of all time. Years later, I had the privilege to talk to him at an adult level about 3 months before this tragedy happened, at the age of 22. With a beer in my hand at the famous Rainbow Room Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, I ran into Dime by the cigarette machine and asked him if I could speak with him. We talked about a lot of things for about 5 min, like when he played Mesa Amphitheater in Mesa, AZ on The Great Southern Trendkill tour in 1996. He was real responsive and friendly, and I wished him much future success in his new band Damageplan which I was impressed by with the work he did on their debut album New Found Power. When I thought about how we said goodbye, what happened was Dime and I hit both our fists together, and I said, “See ya at the Damageplan show in Tempe, AZ and his typical saying he said to me was “You know it brother,” I basically cried the second I heard the news and reminisced on that great moment.

He was such a down to earth guy, and influenced my life as a guitar player all throughout my teenage years. It was spiritual to get ready for a Pantera concert and to hear the man play live growing up. This affects all the metal communities worldwide, it will affect me for the rest of my life, and he will go down in history as a guitar legend and as a lifestyle. As a musician, I am not afraid when I perform on stage, even if a band doesn’t have any security, there is that sense of decency at least for a human not to harm another human over music. For this person with mental illness or whatever it was that triggered the murder, the stalker like obsession for musicians or any celebrity should be reported immediately to authorities. I don’t think this has ever happened before in the history of music, as far as someone getting on stage and executing someone while they are still handling their instrument. I will never forget this tragic event, to me it hit harder than 9/11.

We dedicated our show to Dimebag Dec 10th, 2004 at The Marquee Theater at the same venue Damageplan performed about a month prior from the show. The show started out as a local metal bands fest, but it was declared a memorial for Dimebag with about 800 in attendance. Channel 5 news did a coverage story about the issue of violence at metal shows with me and some of the Motive members. Our vocalist Nathan Gearhart did guest vocals with a thrash metal band from Phoenix, called Motive, they performed Fucking Hostile by Pantera. R.I.P. Dimebag, shred some licks with Chuck Schuldiner in the spiritual world, and we will meet again. My deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the victims in this berserk asinine shooting. – John from Vehemence
